June 1st — Throwback Thursday

Hi and Happy Thursday. Can you believe that today is June 1st?  I sure can’t.  It is amazing that we are beginning the sixth month of this year.  Time has been flying by. Here is an oldie and a goodie photo of Ian.

At this age, he loved his pacifier. Can you see his dimple on the left cheek? It is just barely visible.  He was happy about his adventure. He was young and small and loving the exploration of the sand. This photo was taken on Hutchinson Island, Florida.

We had several fun trips to Florida as well as to San Diego, California in his young life.  What a blessing those have been.  The sand in Florida was quite different than Mission Beach.  As you can see in this picture, there are a lot of shells everywhere.  I picked up so many.  Fun!

He will soon be out of school and summer will begin.  We are so ready.  I do enjoy the summer and the slower pace.  We will be busy with family business activities and time with family.  However, we will also have time to play, read, swim, eat ice cream, play games, and have adventures.

I hope that you too will have a great summer.  What are your plans?.

On this first day of the month of summer, I am thankful for:

  • End of the year parties
  • Signing yearbooks
  • Cookouts and swimming with family
  • Visits with family and friends
  • Our library’s summer reading program
  • Time to color
  • Time to play
  • Days we can sleep in
  • Longer evenings with my guys
  • Evening walks
  • Summer movies and TV shows
  • Ice cream on hot days
  • Working at home in my pajamas
  • Staying home all day
  • A less restricted schedule
  • Later bed times

Happy first day of June!  I wonder what adventures we will have this month?  I cannot wait to find out.

Happy August!

August.8-3-16Happy August 3rd! Here it is extremely hot and muggy!  How is it in your world?  Ian is back in school and so far so good.  We go back extremely early but have lots of breaks throughout the year.  It just makes for a very hot beginning of school.

Thank goodness for air conditioning, ice cubes, ice-cold water, and ice cream.  These all help on miserable days.  And on a hot walk home, we are thankful for the shade and breezes that blow.  We are also thankful for a quick rain shower.

Most of July I didn’t write blogs. I hope to do a better job this month.  We had a very busy summer than just flew by. I tried to have down time along with our activities so that is one reason that I didn’t write very much.  And, I am working on new inspiration and what moves me to write.

We had a great summer and had a lot of fun. One evening after running errands, we went to Arby’s and picked up food that we ate at home.  The above photo is Ian’s five-minute fry.  It was the longest that we have seen and took him five minutes to eat.

On this middle of the first week of August, I am thankful for:

  • An amazing summer
  • The excitement of a new school year
  • Library books
  • Play time and down time
  • Seeing friends again
  • Our amazing teachers and school staff
  • My family and friends
  • Prayer support
  • A boy who is excited and amazed to be a third grader
  • Routines and consistency
  • Dinner with my parents and aunt
  • A backpack that Ian wants to use again
  • Food for lunches
  • Special times with siblings
  • New sneakers that Ian helped choose
  • Running errands with Kirk
  • Ice water
  • Ice cold beer with tacos
  • A surprise lunch with a dear friend
  • Photos of friends
  • Hugs with my guys at the end of the day

I wonder if the rest of the month will be as hot as this week?  I imagine it will.  We will do our best to stay cool and will make the best of it.  Happy August!

Summer Has Flown By

lake.summer.7-27Hi and Happy Wednesday.  Can you believe that it is the last Wednesday of July?  I sure can’t.  I have been away from this blog for most of this month and wrote almost nothing.  I hope to get back to more regular blogs very soon. Our summer has been fun and busy and is now winding down. This week we are very much enjoying since school is starting very soon.  We have longer breaks throughout the school year but it does make for a shorter summer.

We didn’t make it to the beach this year but that is okay.  We had a few trips to see family and friends in the lovely mountains of North Carolina where it was a bit cooler.  We did some shopping and walking around.  We also have had a few cookouts, went swimming a few times, had a game night or two, finished some great books, and watched a few movies.

Also, we celebrated Kirk’s birthday and had a few days of parties and special times with him.  This summer I also had a high school reunion.  I was on the planning committee.  We had a great time and a great turnout.  I am fortunate to have a class of people who very much enjoy seeing each other and have plenty to catch up on.  I will write more on that later.

As this summer winds down, I am thankful for many things.  One of them is the view from this photo.  It is of the lake that we saw while crossing a bridge.

  • Photos of old friends
  • Decades-old friendships
  • A weekend of chatting and fun with classmates
  • Ice cream treats
  • Taco Tuesdays
  • Watching the movie “Max,” which Ian picked
  • Ian finishing three books over the summer
  • Dancing The Electric Slide and other favorites
  • Watching an old movie with Ian
  • New Lego builds and a new stuffed toy
  • Watching and talking about the two conventions
  • Time to rest and hang out with my guys
  • The flexibility of my schedule
  • Air conditioning
  • Ice water and iced tea
  • Cold beer and pizza from a local diner
  • Our family pulling together in times of need
  • Keeping in touch on a regular basis
  • Prayer support for loved ones
  • Having time to make many memories
  • Late nights and late mornings
  • Days at home in our pajamas
  • New milestones with Ian

I wonder what we will be doing the rest of this summer?  I am not sure since there isn’t much time left.  We however will make the best of it.  Hope you do the same!  God Bless.

Throwback Thursday – Summer!

TBT_6-23-2016Hi and Happy Thursday. Are you having a great summer? We are!  So far, so good.  We are about to finish our third week of summer and are having a wonderful time. This photo was taken of Ian in Fort Pierce, Florida many years ago.

When he was this age, his pacifier was a constant for him. This was one of the first times that he got to walk on the sand, or should I say run. He loved it. He still does love it. Sadly we won’t be going to the beach this summer, but have plenty of other things to keep us busy.

Last night, we went to my parent’s house for swimming and dinner. They have a neighborhood pool that we enjoyed. It was a very hot day so the water was perfectly cool and fun. After swimming, we went back to their house and had a great dinner and dessert and plenty of laughs. It was great.

Tonight is game night and homemade pizza at our house. My parents are coming over for that, which will also be fun. Big decision of the evening will be, do we play The Game of Life or Star Wars Monopoly or both?  Perhaps Dominos or the card game Pounce? We will see what Ian and everyone else feel like.

Life with no alarm clocks or set schedules is very nice this time of year. And, since I work at home, I can be flexible enough to start later in the morning or wear my pajamas. How great is that? It’s the little things that become the big blessings, isn’t it?!

Our summer started with a trip to North Carolina which was great. That was for both work and play. We had time to visit family, take a few walks, enjoyed dinner out with friends, and bought cookies and almond strudel at a wonderful bakery, and frozen yogurt treats. Also, I bought a new coloring book (yes I do like coloring), and Ian got a new Lego set. I helped him build it and we took several pictures.

June has been good so far and July should be as well. Next month we will go back to North Carolina, have a chance to visit some friends, may attend a baseball game, and I will have a high school reunion. I have great classmates who are always fun to see.  Cannot wait.

I love all of the memories we are making this summer with Ian. Each day has something fun. Whether it’s spending the day with messy hair and clothes to swimming to reading a library book to watching a favorite cartoon, we are enjoying our time together.

In addition to all of our fun, we are thinking of and praying for those suffering and struggling. We are talking with Ian about what can be done to help others and reminding him to always love others and be respectful. Also, we encourage him to ask questions that he has and we discuss those. With so much going on in the world, there is much to learn.

I wonder what other adventures the summer will bring?  I cannot wait to find out. Hope you also have a great summer!  Enjoy.

Hi and Happy Thursday!  It is hard to believe that today is the 3rd day of September.  We are almost finished with our 5th week of school.  Wow, time flies by.  This summer seems but a memory now.  We had a great time and made some fabulous memories.

Our summer went by so quickly and was just nine weeks.  Not enough time in my opinion since I always want more summer and more down time and more time without our usual schedule.  But, then again, would it be as special and magical if it went on and on?  Something to think about.

This photo is from a few summers ago.  Ian was having a great time playing at the beach.  He loves it as much now as then.  He likes to do some things on his own and also play with his cousins.  It was great family time and lots of it.  We had that many other years as well and are so very fortunate.

So many summer memories are precious and ones that I love.  My favorite place to spend the summer is at the beach in San Diego, California.  The weather is usually just right.  There is very little humidity and it is cool at night.  That is what I grew up with and now what Ian is growing up with.

Soon it will be fall/autumn.  That is my favorite season in both Tennessee and North Carolina.  I love all things fall.  For now though, I am enjoying my wonderful summer memories.  Hope you have them as well.

Today, I am thankful for:

  • Seeing cousins this summer after several years
  • Catching up with dear friends who I hadn’t seen in a few years
  • Walks at the beach and back and forth to our motel
  • Fish tacos on the beach house porch
  • Healing from an injury from the beach trip
  • The ocean waves and breezes
  • A house that has been in my family for generations
  • Memories of ice cream treats
  • Sharing so many special times with my hubby and son
  • Sunsets and photo opportunities
  • Family bonding time
  • Laughter and singing with family and friends
  • Celebrations
  • Two parties for my parents’ 50th anniversary
  • Another wonderful summer

I wonder what our next summer will bring?  I am sure it will also be fun.  Until then, I will enjoy the fall, winter, and spring.

One Week Until School Starts

GEDSC DIGITAL CAMERA

What The? Just one week left of summer? How is that possible? Where did the time go?   How did it get here so fast?  So I have to buy school supplies to buy this week?  No more late nights during the week and sleeping in?

It seems we just started our summer and now it is nearly over.  My time flies when you are having fun!  And we had a lot of fun and a great summer.  Hope your summer has been great as well.

It is hard to believe that one week from today, Ian will start 2nd grade.  He is starting his fourth year of school and that is amazing to me.  He loved preschool, kindergarten, and 1st grade.  And, now for 2nd grade.

I wonder who his teacher will be?  We should find that out in a day or two.  I wonder what friends will be in his class?  I hope several that he has known and he can always make more.

We love school so the transition will be good.  I just always want more summer and more time to enjoy one another without our normal commitments and schedules.

We have had a great summer and have done so many fun things.  We have made memories, spent time with many loved ones, and have so enjoyed a relaxing schedule.

This photo was taken in the mountains in California.  Here are Ian and I in the meadow on our amazing visit. That was a great day and one of our many fond memories.

This week we will purchase his school supplies, get back on our school schedule, and get our minds back on school. Still we will enjoy the last few days of summer with games, swimming, and plenty of other activities.

Some of our summer highlights were:

  • Monopoly games that took days to finish
  • Treats from the ice cream truck
  • Flying on a jet plane
  • Singing around the piano with my family and friends as my aunt played for us
  • Swimming with my brother, sister, and our families
  • Holding hands with more than 20 family members before a shared meal
  • Having Ian play with his cousins and friends
  • Completing some great books
  • Pizza at a favorite place in town
  • Going to a minor league baseball game
  • Seeing our skating-in-slow-motion friend and skateboarding dog at the beach
  • Laughs and memories with many loved ones
  • Celebrating the life of a friend who passed away last summer
  • Having Ian finish reading “Charlotte’s Web” and then build a Lego set of the characters in the story
  • Celebrating my parent’s 50th anniversary in two different cities
  • Celebrating my hubby’s birthday and several other loved ones as well
  • Taking time each day to enjoy each other’s company and truly listen to one another
  • Having Ian complete nine books in our library’s summer reading program

I wonder if I can savor this last week of the summer of 2015?  I plan to do just that and enjoy all of the memories that we made.

Summertime!

SANYO DIGITAL CAMERADon’t you just love the summer?  I sure do.  We have been quite busy this month and so I haven’t been able to write as much.  A lot is going on each day, so time for the computer can be a challenge.

I miss the writing, but I am having a lot of fun with long conversations with Ian, having time for work and play, staying up later than we normally do, and having time to relax.

This picture was taken a few years ago of Ian at the beach.  He was playing in Mission Bay and having a great time!

Here are a few thoughts and quotes about the summer.  Enjoy!  I will try to post more regularly very soon.

Summer to me is:

  • Lazy mornings
  • Bare feet in the sand and surf
  • An ice cream treat on a hot day
  • Playing games for hours
  • Reading one book after the other
  • Long walks
  • Lots of laughs and fun times
  • Long conversations with friends and family
  • Heat and humidity in the south
  • Cool weather in Southern California
  • The Beach Boys music and other beachy music
  • Playing with Ian
  • Listening to Ian talk about his favorite Lego build
  • The sun not setting until almost 10 p.m.
  • Swimming at the pool and ocean

A few quotes about summer:

  • “The tans will fade but the memories will last forever.” — Unknown
  • “It’s a cruel season that makes you get ready for bed while it’s light out.” — Bill Watterson
  • “The summer night is like a perfection of thought.” — Wallace Stevens
  • “In summer, the song sings itself.” — William Carlos Williams
  • “Deep summer is when laziness finds respectability.” — Sam Keen
  • “Hey! It’s summer! Be free and happy and danceful and uninhibited and now-y!” — Terri Guillemets

  • “Every summer has its own story.” — Unknown
  • “Summer — Hair gets lighter. Skin gets darker. Water gets warmer. Drinks get colder. Music gets louder. Nights get longer. Life gets better.” — Unknown

I wonder what the rest of the summer will bring?  I imagine a lot of fun and a trip to the beach.  Can’t wait!  Have a great one!!!

Happy July 1st!

Nothing says summer like the ocean and the beach!

It is amazing to me that it is already the first day of July!  Our summer is flying by.  We are having a blast and are quite busy, so that is why I haven’t been writing as much.

How is your summer going?  Is it hot and humid where you live?  Or is it cool?  Or wet?  There seem to be many kinds of weather this summer that we don’t normally see.

We have had quite a bit of rain, strong thunderstorms, and lightning. Thankfully no flooding as in some parts of the country.  And no fires.  I realize how blessed we really are for that.  My prayers go out to all of those who have suffered losses.

The air is often very humid in the summer where I live.  So it feels sticky anytime that you go outside.  After living in the same state throughout my entire life, you’d think I was used to that.  But, I am not.

We have had a recent break in that humidity and it has been so nice.  On a recent lunch out, we had a pleasant meal on the deck of the restaurant.  There was even a nice breeze.

That is how the weather is in the summer at Mission Beach, CA.  The above picture is of the ocean there.  I just love that beach and the Pacific Ocean!  It is a place I love to visit.  Thankfully we are going there this summer and I am so looking forward to it!

Nothing says summer to me like a trip to the beach!  How about you?

Some of my favorite things at the beach we visit are:

  • The blue of the ocean
  • The ocean breeze
  • The beach house
  • The front porch with table and benches
  • The feel of the sand in my toes
  • The majesty of the ocean
  • The movement of the waves
  • The boardwalk
  • The sea wall where we watch sunsets
  • The fish taco shop
  • The fun with friends and family
  • The bead store where lovely creations are made
  • The trips to Trader Joes
  • The long walks
  • The pier and nearby restaurants
  • The hope of seeing a green flash as the sun sets
  • The many memories

I wonder if the rest of our summer will be as much fun as the first half was?  I think that it will be.  I am certainly looking forward to it.

Throwback Thursday – Balboa Park

TT2.6-25-2015

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Hi and Happy Thursday.  Can you believe that we are less than a week until the end of June?  I sure can’t!  The month has been flying by.

We have had a great month and a great summer.  We have been busy with the family business, activities for our family, parties, and Ian finished his books for the library’s summer reading program.  In fact, he read 4 more books than were on the original list for an independent reader.  Yeah Ian!

We have also had time to sleep in, play games, swim, enjoy ice cream cones, visits with friends and family, walks in the morning (before the humidity), a few nights out to a favorite pizza place, play time at home, and our slower pace.  It has been great and quite relaxing.  After a busy year, that is exactly what we needed.

We are looking forward to an upcoming trip to San Diego, CA, for a family reunion.  This is one of my favorite cities to visit and I cannot wait.  We haven’t been there for a while so we are very excited.

These two pictures are from several years ago when we went to the Organ Pavilion in Balboa Park in San Diego.  The park is full of museums, lovely gardens and grounds, and great restaurants.  And, the San Diego Zoo is part of this park as well.

Balboa Park is one of my favorite places to visit while in San Diego, along with the beach and Seaport Village.  There are so many things to see and do at all three places.  Let the fun begin!

A few things I love about the summer:

  • Waking up without an alarm (for the most part)
  • Ice cream cones on a hot day
  • Swimming
  • Watching Ian enjoy his books for summer reading program
  • Extra time for lazy mornings
  • Games in the evenings
  • Movies during the week
  • Beach time with family and friends

I wonder what summer fun we will have today?  I am looking forward to finding out.

Throwback Thursday – Cold Treats

SANYO DIGITAL CAMERAHi and Happy Thursday!  We are almost finished with our second week of summer.

We continue to have a good time and are enjoying ourselves very much.  Time is going very fast as often happens when we’re having fun.

We have had some lazy days and some days where we have been quite busy.   We have enjoyed playing Monopoly, going to the library for summer books, and having cookouts with family.

This weekend we plan to go swimming and are looking forward to that.  I love the water and ease of exercise.  I also enjoy floating on my back in the water, and working with Ian as he is still learning to swim.  He keeps getting better.

Where we live is humid in the summer, so we are in our air-conditioned house for much of the day.  On these muggy days, we have come to truly appreciate our cold treats.  Sweet iced tea, ice water, and cold beers are our drinks of choice.  I actually like semi-sweet or half sweet/half unsweet tea the best.

And, we love our ice cream treats too.  Nothing like a big scoop of ice cream to help cool us down on a hot day.  This photo was taken three summers ago at the beach.  This was the treat he picked from the ice cream truck.  This particular ice cream was extremely messy as you can tell from the picture.  It was also one of his favorites.

I will have to plan to take plenty of ice cream truck money when we go to the beach this summer!  After all, that is one of Ian’s favorite parts of the day.  It is one of mine as well.  Nothing like the taste of chocolate mint on a cone as I watch the sunset into the ocean. Ahhhhh… summer bliss!

I wonder what tomorrow’s cold treat will be?  Tomorrow is supposed to be another warm and muggy day, so I am sure whatever it is will hit the spot!
