Flashback Friday – Bare Feet

3.kids.Michigan0001Hi and Happy Friday.  The last two weeks have been crazy busy so I haven’t had any time to write.  I hate when that happens. Today, however, I wanted to write a short blog and post a fun picture.

On this rainy day, I decided on a photo of toes and sand. I was sitting on a dune in Michigan with my sister (center) and my brother (right).  I love our messy hair, striped t-shirts, big smiles, and bare feet. This was during a family vacation with some friends.

We had so much fun on this family vacation.  In addition to visiting the dunes, we went on a tour of a Kellogg’s Cereal packaging plant.  It was fascinating to see how that process works.  We then went back to our friends’ house and created our own plant and enjoyed some free cereal samples.

Also on this trip, we went to have a meal in Canada.  That was long before passports were needed for a quick trip across the border.  We purchased some soft drink bottles while there.  They looked so different and were cool souvenirs.

We were fortunate to have great family vacations.  We regularly went to the family beach house, also went to visit family and friends across the country, and went on camping trips.  Mom and Dad always made sure we had a great time.  I have many fond memories of this vacations.

Now, Kirk, Ian, and I have enjoyed several fun vacations and the first of many camping trips.  My favorite place to go with these two continues to be the beach house.  They seem to have as much fun as I do.

Today I am thankful for:

  • Memorable trips with my family
  • Visiting my grandparents and other relatives
  • Old family photos
  • The sound of rain as I go to sleep
  • A raincoat and umbrella on a rainy day
  • Girls Night Out last night
  • Laughter and stories with dear friends
  • Walking in the rain
  • Prayer support for a sick friend
  • Friendships and family
  • Love and compassion
  • Weekend time to relax

I wonder what our Friday has in store for us?  I know it will be rainy but warm.  So it will be a good time to enjoy being home.  I am so looking forward to that.

Throwback Thursday – Beach House and Big Hair

Throwback_Thursday_2-27-2014Hi and Happy Thursday!  How are you doing on this next to last day of month?  Can you believe it — a few days away from March?  This year is flying by.

Today I decided to post a fun picture from the late 1980s (87 or 88) for Throwback Thursday.  It is of myself and my mother at the beach house we love so much.  Don’t you just love our big hair?  That was such a part of the 1980s and 1990s.

This house looks quite different now and has shutters, but it is still a favorite gathering place for our family’s multiple generations.  I think this photo was taken before our family friend made a special table with benches for the porch.  It turned the porch into our dining room and often has been the favorite “room” in the house.  Look one direction, you have a view of the ocean.  Look the other, the bay across a street.

This was taken when I was in my 20s and still super skinny.  To be that size again would be amazing. I just didn’t realize how good I had it at that age.  I could eat nearly anything that I wanted to, stayed pretty active, and I didn’t seem to gain any weight.  It was easier at that age.  One difference was I was in college, living in a dorm with no elevator, and had no car.  So I walked miles and miles each day.  I am working on the walking again and hope to do more and more each week.

In the 1980s and other years since, I have tried long and medium length hair.  Short hair has always been better for me but it has been fun to try different lengths.  I may have even had a perm in this style.  I just can’t remember.  Mom has had a variety of short styles — sometimes with more hair than others.  This particular time was more hair.

I also think that both of us have bigger hair because of the ocean breeze.  That always makes a difference for both of us.  At this particular beach with your windows open, you don’t need air conditioning since the breeze is constant.  I love the feeling of that breeze and the smell of the ocean in the air. Actually I love all things about the beach and being near the beach.  I love the sound and feel of the ocean, the sand in my toes, the relaxed way that I always feel, and the fun that we always have.

The down side is because of all of the salt, it is very hard on metal.   A few years ago, my dad changed the lock on the porch gate.  It was rusty and corroded and looked like it had been in the elements for years, yet it had been changed the previous year.  It was amazing how quickly that changed.  That salt is also hard on buildings and cars at the beach.  Rust quickly appears on many things that are outside.

This is just one of many photos from that summer and that era.  I will have to share others.  And, I’d love to hear about your big hair and beach adventures.

I wonder when the next time will be that I am at this beach house with my mother?  It may be a while since money is more limited these days.  There still is plenty of fun to be had.  And on the plus side, we had 5 years in a row that we went.  So, I certainly don’t feel deprived.  Hope you have a great day!
