Love One Another

GEDSC DIGITAL CAMERA“Love is all you need.”  “Love means never having to say you’re sorry.” “I will always love you.” “Love one another as I have loved you.”

Love comes in many shapes and sizes.  There are many types of love and many things that define love.  As you know, we just celebrated the big love day of the year, Valentines’ Day. Well, it is a day that stores and restaurants try to make the big day.  We are encouraged to spend a marked up amount on flowers, eat out, and spend a lot on cards.

That is fine but why not enjoy a home cooked meal with our mate and children?  Why not enjoy our own tradition of handwriting a special card?  Why not have both of you sign the same card as Kirk and I did this year? And, why not remember to love and show our love each and every day?

Don’t get me wrong, I have enjoyed the fun of Valentine’s Day, the fancy dinners out, and the dozen red roses. There is nothing like that in the early stages of a relationship. But, more importantly, I like when Kirk gives me flowers just because, or has asked if I’d like to eat out after a tiring day at work, or wants to have a date night in the middle of the week.

I also like to do special things for him just because. And I like that we tell each other I love you every day.  And, we tell our son that as well. We also regularly demonstrate love to one other by the things we help with around the house, the projects, and the teamwork.

Before meeting Kirk, I had many years without a special someone. it could be tough at times but I did my best to enjoy time with my friends and family. I also learned to love myself and figure out what I wanted in a relationship. That was a blessing and helped me appreciate my relationship even more.

At the top of the blog, I listed a few quotes about love.  Here are my thoughts on them.

  • Love is all you need.  This is from a great Beatles song that I really like.  To me, we need more than love to have relationships work.  We also need trust, honesty, forgiveness, and patience.  Clearly love needs to be part of it since without it, it is very hard to have the rest.
  • Love means never having to say you’re sorry.  This was made famous in The Love Story movie.  I totally disagree with this sentiment.  To me, love means saying sorry often and as needed. Not so much that it means nothing, but enough to show we realize when we made mistakes.
  • I will always love you. This is from one of my favorite Celine Dion songs and is lovely. I agree that you can always love someone. However, you may not always like them and can get frustrated with them. True love means sticking with them through it all and always being there for each other. And loving unconditionally.
  • Love one another as I have loved you.  Christ told us to do this and I think we are lacking with this at times.  We seem to be a society of mistrust, gossip, and a lot of negativity.  I hope and pray that we can get back to truly loving others and wanting the best for each other.  People often try to take credit for another’s accomplishments or blame people when something doesn’t work out.  None of us are perfect and we all make mistakes. My hope is that we can find a way to be more loving and kind.

Love is an amazing gift and something that is rare and precious.  It is to be treasured and respected.  It is to be given freely and without expecting anything in return.  And, it is to be given without condition.

The loves in my life are:

  • My husband who I cherish
  • Our son who is a gift from the Lord and a blessing each day
  • My parents who taught me what love means
  • My siblings and their spouses who I adore
  • My nieces and nephews who I am fascinated by
  • My cousins who I have shared so much with
  • My aunts and uncles who love me like their own
  • My grandparents who I miss each day and loved talking with
  • My in-laws who welcomed me into their family
  • My lifetime friends who I have laughed and cried with
  • My newer friends who I am enjoying getting to know
  • My friends from work, school, and church who are so special
  • My loved ones who have passed and are still missed

I wonder if I will truly remember to love as Christ loved me.  I am going to do my best to do just that.  My prayer is that we all have love and can truly love others.

Happy Anniversary Kirk!

Our Wedding Day“Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails.” – from 1st Corinthians 13

Happy 17th Anniversary to my hubby Kirk! Here we are on our wedding day.  We were married at the church where we met. The pastor who married us was my pastor as I was growing up, he confirmed me, and is a longtime family friend. His message to us about love and marriage was the perfect start for us. Also, we heard a reading from 1st Corinthians 13 about love.

My aunt who is an amazing pianist played some special family songs prior to the wedding, and our dear family and friends were there to cheer us on and celebrate the start of our family.  And, the choir sang us a blessing at the end of the wedding.  It was such a special day.

At our reception, a dear friend was the caterer and the food was terrific. She made the two of us plates of food. We then enjoyed them that night at our condo. I danced with both Kirk and my dad at the reception and visited with some great people. We also had time with our family and so many others.

Since then we have had a great marriage. We are a team and work well together.  Not to say things are perfect but we have found our groove and truly compliment each other. We have been through struggles and hard times and have learned a lot over the years. I am so thankful for Kirk and blessed to be his wife. I didn’t meet him until I was 30 years old. When I did, my entire life changed and he was well worth the wait.

I love this man truly and deeply and love that we have such a wonderful child. These two guys are amazing blessings to me. My favorite place to be is with these two at our house – whether it is talking as we wake up in the morning to hugs and giggles before bed, whether it is eating our breakfast to munching on popcorn as we watch a favorite movie.

This year we celebrate 17 years of married life. The gifts for this anniversary are furniture, shells, and watches. We recently purchased new couches and we collected shells while at the beach. So those gifts are covered. It is funny that I was thinking about getting a new watch.  I can call it another anniversary gift.

How do I love thee Kirk, let me count the ways.  I love your sense of humor, I love our jokes and inside stories, I love your strength, I love that you help so much at our home, I love that you are my soul mate and love for life. I love that you are such an amazing father to our son. I love you and always will.

Happy Anniversary / Birthday

Patti_Dad_2006 GEDSC DIGITAL CAMERAHappy Anniversary to my sweet hubby Kirk and Happy Birthday to my wonderful Dad.   It is an honor to celebrate today with these two amazing and important men in my life.

To Dad, I say thank you for teaching me all that you did, for being so attentive and interested in your family and our activities, for showing me the importance of being a good steward with my money, and for spending time with our family.

To Kirk, I want to say thanks so much for loving me as much as you do, for being an amazing father to our son, for being a great friend, partner and so much more, for always making me laugh and for comforting me when I cry, and for sharing in all of the little and important things with me. You are the best!

I remember the day of our wedding so vividly and cherish the memories of both of you that day.  Dad walking me down the aisle to greet my hubby-to-be, having the opportunity to dance with both of you, and being able to share the day is such a gift. You are both such a blessing to me and I thank the Lord for you each day.

Happy Anniversary Kirk!

Our Wedding DayHappy Anniversary to my husband, Kirk.  Today is our 15th anniversary.  It is also my Dad’s birthday.  (Please see the birthday post from yesterday for him.)

Here we are on our wedding day.  What a fun day that was!  Talk about Throwback Thursday.

Since that time, we have lost several dear family members and friends, but also many have been added to the family.

Our flower girl graduated from college and is now a teacher and doing really well!  We are very proud of her.  Our ring bearer celebrated his 20th birthday this week.  He is in school and working and we are also proud of him.

It is hard to believe how grown up they are now.  Time flies, that’s for sure.  My nephew who was 1 when we got married just turned 16 years old.  He is a fine young man and enjoying school.

I understand that for the 15th anniversary, the traditional gift is crystal and the more modern gift is watches and timepieces.  Not sure about a gift of crystal but I think Kirk would like a new watch or clock.  We have a few special ones that we have gotten over the years.

It is fun to think back over the years of our relationship and the fun and great things we have done together.  We have traveled to Scotland and Hawaii to visit family, have purchased a variety of cars, moved from a condo to a house, and, the greatest adventure, having our son Ian.

I am blessed by these two men in my life — my best guy and my best little guy.  I thank the Lord each day for the two of them and how they have enriched my life.

When Kirk and I met, it was at an evening service at my church.  I never expected to meet someone there — let alone it be my future husband.  I believe that the Lord ensured that he was there when it was time for us to meet.  We do believe in Divine Intervention.  We clicked immediately and had a 12-hour first date.

Later that year, we were planning a wedding that included our dear friends and family and a surprise visit from my best friend from elementary school.

At the time I was singing in the choir at church.  The choir sang us a beautiful blessing during our service.  I had to really work not to cry.  And, my aunt who always played the piano for family gatherings was there to play special family music prior to the service.

All in all, it was a glorious day.  And, thanks to my hubby and son, I have had many glorious days since.  My favorite thing to do is have the three of us talk in bed and laugh and giggle when we wake up.  It is our special family time.

Now.Oct.21Kirk, I love you more than I ever thought possible to love someone else.  I cherish our life and love more and more each year that we are together.
