Flashback Friday – My Valentines

GEDSC DIGITAL CAMERAHi and Happy Friday.  For today’s Flashback Friday, I wanted to include a few pictures.  One is of my Valentines — my hubby and my son.  They are my true valentine and my little valentine.

This photo was taken three years ago when we were celebrating Valentine’s Day with a lovely lunch out.  It was fun to spend the day with my two guys.  Ian was in preschool at the time and we had the day to enjoy.  It was wonderful.

GEDSC DIGITAL CAMERAThe second picture is of some Valentine’s gifts that Ian made for me while he was in preschool.  I still treasure them and love his creativity.

This year at school, Ian’s class worked on a writing of who their Valentine is.  Ian chose me and said he loves his mom and that I take good care of him.  What a sweet card that is.  I will treasure it always.

Today I am thankful for:

  • The love of a wonderful man
  • My partner and best friend
  • My son and his unconditional love
  • Hearing, “I love you Mom”
  • My parents and grandparents who demonstrated what true love and partnership is
  • My family for loving me as I am
  • My friends who I can laugh and cry with
  • Special notes and photos from loved ones
  • Saying “I love you” and truly meaning it and hearing it back
  • Loving others
  • Hugs from my dear ones

I wonder what our Valentine’s Day will bring?  I am sure more love, great food, a few treats, and special times together.  Have a great one.

Flashback Friday – Bare Feet

3.kids.Michigan0001Hi and happy Friday!  For today’s Flashback Friday, I decided to post a photo of my sister, my brother, and me with our bare feet on a sand dune circa late 1970s / early 1980s.

I like our big grins, bare feet, and hands in the sand. With all of the cold weather this week, this photo made me happy. And warm.  I also like our striped shirts, the patches on my jeans, and that all of our jeans are riding up as we sit in the nice warm sand.

This particular trip was somewhere in Michigan at the dunes.  We enjoyed them and were fascinated with this different sand than we were used to.

This photo was taken while we were visiting friends and family.  We had a great time.  During this trip we also went to a plant where they packaged cereal.  I still vividly remember recreating the process in our friend’s basement after seeing the professionals at work.

I have many fond memories of growing up with these two.  Our parents were great about taking us to a variety of towns and cities throughout the country.  We also enjoyed many camping trips.  I am at left in the photo, Cindy is in the middle, and Richmond is on the right.

I am thankful for:

  • Camping trips with my parents and siblings
  • Family adventures
  • Food cooked over a camp fire
  • Playing cards with the family
  • Singing our favorite camp songs after eating s’mores
  • Cassette tapes that played during long car trips
  • Seeing these dunes for the first time on this trip
  • Crossing the border into Canada for dinner
  • Old and grainy photos
  • Scanners for old photos
  • Bonfires on the beach
  • Running around after sunset
  • My wonderful and amazing family

I wonder what the next adventures will be with my sister and brother and with our parents?  I cannot wait to find out and love that our spouses and children will be there to enjoy the adventures with us!  Three generations will be even more fun!

Flashback Friday – Theater Fun

Mairzy and Patti as Nuns Sound of MusicHi and Happy Friday!  For today’s Flashback Friday, I chose a picture from the early 1980s.  Mom and I are dressed as nuns for “The Sound of Music,” which was performed at our community theater.  We were in the chorus of singing nuns and my sister played Marta.  It was such a fun show.  In this picture, I love the expression of our eyes, our smiles, dimples, and the praying hands.  We did have a great time.

Throughout my childhood, I was in plays and musicals and loved every minute of them.  Our community theater produced great shows with amateur actors, singers, and dancers.  There also was a Junior Playhouse for kids.  We spent quite a few summers there.

Some of the shows that we did were “J.B.” about the story of the book of Job in the Bible, “The Emperor’s New Clothes,” “Barnum,” “The Sound of Music,” “Hello Dolly,” and others that I don’t remember.

Then in high school, I was in the drama club and had a blast with that as well.  The shows that I was in for that were “Fiddler on the Roof,” “Our Town,” “Around the World In 80 Days,” “Pillow Talk,” and “Bye, Bye Birdie.”  In college, I performed in three musicals — “Camelot,” “Carousel,” and “South Pacific.”

It has been a long time since I have been on the stage.  I miss the fun and camaraderie that the cast has.  And, since I love to sing, it was fun to have that chance.  Long days and many hours were spent in the community theater and my high school theater.

We went with Ian’s Cub Scout Den this Monday on a tour of the square where the community theater was and still is.  It was fun to see that building again and it brought back a lot of great memories. During the summers of junior playhouse, we would walk down to the local pharmacy for snacks and ice cream.  That pharmacy is no longer there.  That building was converted into a restaurant.  The food is good but I miss the pharmacy.

I also love to see musicals and plays.  Two years ago, we took Ian to see Peter Pan and he loved it.  It was an abbreviated production during the school day, but just right for him.  I hope we will see more shows soon.

We have a few friends who are professional actors and I love to see them in their particular genres.  We also have friends who are actively involved in the theaters in their community.  Theater to me was a fun hobby.

A few quotes about the theater:

  • “All the world’s a stage, And all the men and women merely players; They have their exits and their entrances, And one man in his time plays many parts, His acts being seven ages…” William Shakespeare
  • “Movies will make you famous; Television will make you rich; But Theatre will make you good.” — Terrance Mann
  • “Act well your part; there all the honour lies.” — Alexander Pope
  • “Life is a theatre set in which there are but few practicable entrances.” — Victor Hugo
  • “An actor must never be afraid to make a fool of himself.” — Harvey Cocks
  • “The stage is a magic circle where only the most real things happen, a neutral territory outside the jurisdiction of Fate where stars may be crossed with impunity. A truer and more real place does not exist in all the universe.”– P.S. Baber

I wonder when the next time will be that I am in a play or a musical?  I am not sure but hope to be in a show again one day.

Flashback Friday – Cousins At The Beach

Nov7_2014_FF.beachHi and Happy Friday.  It is hard to believe that it’s the first Friday of November already.  This year has flown by!  Since I missed Throwback Thursday yesterday, I decided to post my photo today.

It is of Ian and his cousin Aiden a few years ago at the beach.  They were walking and talking and having a great time. They were in front of the lifeguard tower in the background on the left.  I like the shadows too and that they are in action.

These are two of my parent’s five grandchildren.  On Kirk’s side of the family, there are 10 including Ian and now some great-grandkids.  Ian also has second cousins who we regularly along with his first cousins.  I too have a lot of cousins — 14 first cousins and even more second cousins.

I remember many years of fun at the beach with my cousins and now I am glad that Ian has that with his cousins too.  Our cousins are dear and precious friends and we love them dearly.

Today I am thankful for:

  • Boys enjoying walks in the sand
  • Cousins who have a blast together
  • Cousins who often get together
  • Small toes in the sand
  • Walks with loved ones
  • Weekend fun and adventure
  • Heaters and blankets as the weather gets cooler
  • A windy walk home from school yesterday with Ian

I wonder when we will be at the beach again with our cousins?  I am hoping next summer!  Should be fun, as always!!

Flashback Friday – Happy Halloween

SANYO DIGITAL CAMERA OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAHi and Happy Halloween!  Today is the day for costumes, candy, pumpkins, trick-or-treating, and being scared and scary.  Well, at my house, we don’t like being scared or scaring others, so we won’t be doing any of that. But the rest, we are looking forward to!

For today’s Flashback Friday, I decided to include a few Halloween costumes from year’s past.  First is Ian dressed like a pilot from a few years ago.  The other one is of him as Elmo and me in a similar top and sweater.

Tonight, Ian will be dressed as a knight.  This costume is one that my sister gave us as a hand-me-down.  It is supposed to rain tonight and Ian told me this morning, “Mom, knights don’t carry umbrellas.”  “You are right Ian, so what should we do?” I asked him.

We then decided that we can give out candy in costume to other kids and he seems to really like that idea.  I think he was happy that he wouldn’t get wet that way.

Whatever the weather brings, we will have a good time.  We hope that you do as well.

On this Halloween day, I am thankful for:

  • Messy morning hair on a sweet boy
  • The excitement of dress-up
  • Lovely fall colors
  • A fun dinner out last night with some good friends
  • Having Ian help pick the candy we will give out
  • Trick-or-treating with Ian
  • A garage that keeps our cars warm on cold mornings
  • Pumpkin spice creamer for my coffee
  • The crackle and smell of cooking bacon
  • Having my parents over for dinner and Halloween fun
  • The sun coming up for the start of a new day
  • A weekend of time at home
  • An extra hour of sleep on Saturday night before we change the clocks
  • The forecast of snow over the weekend
  • The feel of warm, just-washed towels and sheets (it’s laundry day)
  • Lunch out with my hubby
  • Catching up with old friends
  • Making time to spend with new friends
  • Having an opportunity for early voting and waiting in a long line
  • A good report card and conference with Ian’s teacher
  • Prayer support from friends and family
  • The ending of my favorite month, October

I wonder what fun and adventures this Halloween day and night will bring?  I look forward to finding out!  Take care and be safe!
