September 5 – Sparkle

Hi and Happy Saturday!  Today’s Photo-A-Day Challenge is Sparkle.  I thought this photo captured that very nicely.  I love how the sun is sparkling on the water and the wet sand.

This was taken several years ago at my favorite beach at sunset.  I have seen hundreds of lovely sunsets at this location, perhaps even thousands. And, I have taken numerous pictures.  Each night is different and lovely in itself.

I really love the sparkle the sun makes on the ocean water both at sunset and during the day.  During the day the lovely blue water shines like diamonds.  In the evening, it takes on a different hue with the pinks, reds, and oranges.

Sparkle as a verb is defined as “shine brightly with flashes of light” and “be vivacious and witty.” As a noun, it is defined as “a glittering flash of light” and “vivacity and wit.”  I think this photo captures the light part. And, it is fun to be witty and vivacious.  I hope I have both of these covered.

Here are some quotes on sparkle:

  • “Never let anyone dull your sparkle.” — Unknown.
  • “Don’t be afraid to sparkle a little brighter.” — Unknown
  • “Dream Big. Sparkle More. Shine Brightly.” — Unknown
  • “People are like stained-glass windows. They sparkle and shine when the sun is out, but when the darkness sets in, their true beauty is revealed only if there is a light from within.” — Elizabeth Kubler-Ross
  • “Consider the fact that maybe…just maybe…beauty and worth aren’t found in a makeup bottle, or a salon-fresh hairstyle, or a fabulous outfit. Maybe our sparkle comes from somewhere deeper inside, somewhere so pure and authentic and REAL, it doesn’t need gloss or polish or glitter to shine.”–Mandy Hale
  • “Do more of what makes you sparkle.” — Unknown

I am all for being our best and pursuing our dreams.  And I agree that true beauty comes from within.  So let’s sparkle, be ourselves, and love our life!

Hope you have a great holiday weekend!

Throwback Thursday – Beach Fun

Hi and Happy Thursday!  In honor of my sister’s birthday in a few days, I wanted to post a photo of us from 2009.  I decided to post one of us with a few other people.  We love the beach, so I thought she would enjoy this photo.

From left is my brother, sister-in-law, me, my hubby, and my sister on the end.  Her hubby was not in the picture.  We were sitting on the seawall at sunset at Mission Beach, CA.  This is our favorite place to watch and many, many family photos have been taken here.

This summer we look forward to another beach trip and I am so looking forward to it, as I know my siblings are!  We will be there for a family reunion and will see cousins, and aunt and uncles and dear friends!

There is so much I love about the beach and especially this beach.  I have been honored to share many memories with friends and family.  And, now I love seeing Ian’s generation enjoy it as much I always did growing up.

A few highlights of the beach for me are:

  • Delicious fish tacos
  • Breakfast on our front porch
  • Our tiny beach cottage filled with love
  • Laughs with family and friends
  • Bike rides with family
  • Playing in the bay
  • Long walks
  • Cooking and savoring meals together
  • Our family sing-alongs
  • My aunt’s amazing piano playing ability
  • Sunsets into the ocean
  • Feeling my toes in the sand
  • The feel and smell of the ocean
  • My hair blowing in the breeze
  • The majesty of the ocean and waves
  • The memories of decades of beach fun
  • The waves rushing over my toes and legs

I wonder what fun and mischief we will get into while at the beach this summer?!  I sure cannot wait to find out!

Throwback Thursday / Favorite Time of the Day

P7240424 OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAHi and happy Thursday.  Today is Throwback Thursday and for the photo challenge, it is Favorite Time Of Day.  I decided to post two photos from several years ago.

Especially when at the beach and in the summer, my favorite time of day is sunset.  It is lovely and such fun and a great time for pictures. I also like the time of day in general since it’s time to wind down and discuss our day and have relaxing time as a family.

There is always so much to do in the morning that I like the contrast of time to relax, watch some television or read a good book, have some dessert or fruit, and then enjoy being together.

The hard part in the summer is that the sun doesn’t go down until nearly 10 p.m.  As we go through spring, the days get longer and I have to close doors so that Ian knows that it’s time for bed.

I love our routine before bed – milk for him, we read a story, we say our prayers, potty one last time, and then to bed.  He always give daddy a goodnight hug and kiss and gives mommy the last kiss and hug of the day.

One thing that always said sunset and the end of the day to me was a song we sang at Camp Fire sleepovers – Taps – “Day is done, gone the sun.  From the hills, from the lake, from the skies. All is well, safely rest. God is nigh.”

What is your favorite time of day?  I’d love to hear from you.

I wonder how tonight’s sunset time will be?  I bet it will be lovely through our trees which are blooming.

January 16 – Sun / Throwback Thursday

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAHi and Happy Thursday.  Today’s photo-a-day challenge is Sun and it’s a Throwback Thursday.  So, I decided to combine these into one photo.

This was taken of Ian at the beach when he was about 2 years old. I love how blond his hair got that summer.  Isn’t he a cute little beach bum?

We were enjoying a sunset at our favorite beach.  Over the years, I have taken hundreds of sunset photos at this beach.  I like the colors of the sky in this picture.

The one below is of the lifeguard tower at this favorite beach.  It too is at sunset.

A few quotes about the sun:

  • “Truth is like the sun. You can shut it out for a time, but it ain’t going away.” — Elvis Presley
  • “We all shine on… like the moon and the stars and the sun…we all shine one… come on and on and on.” — John Lennon
  • “To love and be loved is to feel the sun from both sides.” — David Viscott
  • “The sun always shines above the clouds.” — Paul F. Davis

May you have a day full of sunshine!

Beautiful Sunrise

GEDSC DIGITAL CAMERAHi and Happy Tuesday.  Hope you are having a great day on this 14th of January. Yesterday morning, I enjoyed a lovely sunrise.  It was amazing how the clouds looked in the sky and the color of the sky.  Here are a few of the photos that I took.

I have always loved sunsets on the west coast.  I have hundreds of photos from over the years and love them.  I have recently begun taking photos of sunsets from here in the east and they are just as lovely – minus the ocean of course.

Now I am discovering the lovely and varied sunrises as I am up early enough now.  With getting a son off to school each morning and then coming back home for my day, I have time to stop and look at them and take photos as well.  I like having the flexibility of taking photos of items in the morning before my day really gets going.  I am truly blessed to be able to do that.

A few quotes that I found this morning as well:

  • “There is never one sunrise or one sunset the same.” — Carlos Santana
  • “Get outside. Watch the sunrise.  Watch the sunset. How does that make you feel? Does it make you feel big or tiny? Because there’s something good about feeling both.” — Amy Grant
  • “Another sunrise.  Another new beginning.” — Unknown
  • “Opportunities are like sunrises.  If you wait too long, you miss them.” — Unknown
  • “Sunrise paints the sky with pinks and the sunset with peaches. Cool to warm.  So is the progression from childhood to old age.” — Vera Nazarian
  • “Every now and then I sit and watch the sun rise to remind myself how it’s done — peacefully, steadily, warmly, and in beautiful color.” — Richelle E. Goodrich
  • “There’s always a story.  It’s all stories really. The sun coming up every day is a story. Everything’s got a story in it. Change the story, change the world.” — Terry Pratchett
  • “There’s a sunrise and a sunset every single day, and they’re absolutely free.  Don’t miss so many of them.” — Jo Walton

May you have a wonderful day!  I wonder how the sky will look tomorrow morning?  I look forward to finding out.GEDSC DIGITAL CAMERA

Tennessee Sunset

On Saturday night, I had the opportunity to take some pictures of the sunset from my neighborhood in Tennessee. We don’t have a direct view of the sunset or horizon because of the trees.

As my regular readers know, I love sunsets but until now have taken them primarily at the beach in California.

These pictures are quite different but are beautiful in their own way.  I took some at the front of my house and others at the back.

What do you think?  I’d love to see some feedback and comments.

The Golden Hour — Lovely Sunset

SANYO DIGITAL CAMERAHello and Happy Wednesday!! Word Press has a photo challenge each week as part of The Daily Post.  This week’s is The Golden Hour.

The Golden Hour is described in this challenge as the first and last hour of sunlight in the day.  So, it would be the time that the sun is rising or setting.

I don’t know about you, but I love to watch sunsets!  Especially at the ocean at Mission Beach, California.

Over the years, I have taken hundreds if not thousands of photos of these sunsets.  When we are there at the beach, each night after dinner we walk down to the seawall and watch the sun go down.  This is a great family tradition that I truly love and have missed this year.

Last summer we saw a green flash – a cool phenomenon that only happens on the most perfect of evenings.  Just as the sun hits the horizon, you see a flash of green light.  If you blink, you can miss it.

This photo is from last summer on a more cloudy night.  I love how the setting sun is peaking around the clouds and reflecting on the water.

This photo is the background on my computer.  I get to enjoy this beauty each day!

I have wondered why I never take sunset photos at my house – away from the ocean.  The trees are lovely and the colors in the sky are really nice.  But, you can’t see the horizon and the sun actually look like it’s dropping into the ocean as you can at the beach.  Maybe that is the difference.

It has always been easier for me to do sunset photos than sunrise.  I am a night owl, not a morning person.  So, to get up with the sun is a challenge for me.  I will have to try it sometime to see what pictures I can come up with.

I wonder when I will see the next beautiful sunset?  I hope it is soon.
