Throwback Thursday – June 26

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAJust four more days of June left.  Wow!  Where has the month gone?  It seems like we just started it and our summer.  And now we are nearly halfway the summer through already.  Time certainly does fly as we get older, doesn’t it?!

Here is a really sweet picture of Ian at the beach in Fort Pierce, Florida. He was about 2 years old.  I love how it looks like he can reach out and touch the water.  “Look Mommy, almost got it” is what he is seeming to say.

As you can see on the sand, the beach is covered with shells.  This was a great shelling beach.  We had to wear our shoes to keep our feet safe.  Fun times!

Since this picture was taken, Ian has grown and changed so much.  His feet are now probably twice as big and he is much taller.  Amazing he was ever this little.

Today, I am thankful for:

  • My shell collection
  • The feel of sand in my toes
  • My son’s smile
  • A hug from Ian before bed as he says, “I love you Mommy”
  • A cold drink
  • An ocean breeze
  • Our summer schedule
  • A dinner date with my guys
  • Cheering on the USA during a soccer match
  • Watching a baseball game
  • Talking a walk

I wonder what our summer Thursday has in store for us?  I hope it’s something fun!

…And The Livin Is Easy

SANYO DIGITAL CAMERASummertime and the livin is easy.  Hi and Happy Summer!  And TGIF!  We are having a very nice, although hot and humid summer.  How about you?! We have had lot of rain and thunderstorms and last night even some pea-size hail.

This morning, Ian asked me if summer is the rainy season.  I told him not normally, but it certainly has been so far this summer  And, there is a chance of rain every day for the next week.

This photo is of Ian a few years ago.  He was having a great time at the beach.  He loves to play in the sand and in the water. I was a day late on Throwback Thursday, so thought I’d post this now.

For a child, the days of summer can run together.  That is why we talk each morning about the day of the week and the date.  Ian has a calendar that he has been marking off.  He is very excited that tomorrow is the official start of summer.

This summer we are playing, having time on the computer, seeing friends and family, riding his bike with training wheels, drawing and coloring, reading, and doing some school work as well.  It isn’t a lot of work, just enough so he doesn’t lose all that he learned during the school year.

On this day before the official start of summer, I am thankful for:

  • Umbrellas and rain boots on a rainy day so we can sing in the rain
  • Air conditioning so we aren’t quite so sweaty on a very humid day
  • A cold glass of water or iced tea
  • A cold beer with tacos or a hamburger
  • Having extra time to talk to Ian in the morning since we aren’t having to rush out the door
  • Watching a favorite show with Kirk and Ian
  • Savoring frozen yogurt or ice cream
  • Watching Ian play with a friend he hasn’t seen in a long time

I wonder what we’ll be doing next in this lazy, hazy summer.  Can’t wait to find out!

Summer Throwback Thursday

June.5_TTFor today’s Throwback Thursday, I decided to include a picture of Ian at the beach a few years ago.  He looks like he is talking about what he wants to do next.

Just like me, he loves the beach and always has such fun while he is there. Then again, being a kid he is happy in whatever he is doing.  I love how he has taught me to live in the moment.

We’ve almost finished our first week of summer and we are having a blast!  We attended a fun cookout, have been playing at home, reading books for the summer reading program, eating ice cream cones at home a few times, spending time on the computer, and coloring and doing other art projects. So far so good.

Summer and the living is easy and fun.  We are sleeping in a little bit — well just 30 minutes so far.  Hopefully as we go along there will be some later mornings but I doubt it. After a year of getting up at the same time 5 days a week, it’s hard to change for summer.

A few things I am thankful for this week:

  • Listening to Ian read a book that he chose at the library (and he did such a great job)
  • Enjoying chocolate mint ice cream on a cone with Ian
  • Taking our time with breakfast and our mornings
  • Smiling as Ian sings a favorite Bon Jovi song
  • Savoring coffee made each morning by Kirk
  • Shopping at the store with my guys and choosing some special treats
  • Having family over for dinner
  • Talking to an old friend
  • Attending a cookout at my parents’ house and having a blast
  • Sweating outside and then coming into the air-conditioned house
  • Staying home all day

I wonder what the rest of this first week of summer will bring?  I hope it’s something fun and can’t wait to find out.  Take care!

The Start of Summer

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAToday is our first day of summer and you know what? We woke up at the usual time – just like for a school day.  ARG!!!

I was not too happy with that since it is Saturday morning, but I guess old habits take a while to change.  After a year of being on a strict schedule, it will take some time for all of us to get used to a different schedule.

We are looking forward to a relaxing day though.  We will be going to the library this afternoon to sign up for their summer reading program and choosing some new books.

And, this evening, we are going to a cookout at my parent’s house.  So, that too will be nice.

And sometime in the next few days, we will go swimming at the pool.  And hopefully have some time at the lake and at the park as well.

This photo was taken of Ian about 4 years ago at the beach.  He was surprised about something but I don’t remember what it was.  He was ready for summer fun then and he is ready today for the summer to begin.

Today I am thankful for:

  • Spending the morning in our pajamas since we had nothing planned
  • Summer books
  • Ice cream on a hot day
  • Swimming
  • Playing games
  • Staying up later than usual

Summer… and the living is easy.   Hope you have a great summer!

Throwback Thursday – 2 Girls at Mission Beach, CA

Hi and Happy Thursday.   We are just a few days away from the end of the month.  Can you believe it?  This year has flown by.  Now we are in the midst of another wonderful summer!!

Cindy.Patti.seawallToday for my new Throwback Thursday, I wanted to post two of my favorite pictures of me with my sister Cindy.

The time was in the early 1970s, the place is Mission Beach, CA, and as you can see we are wearing matching outfits.

The photo on the left is cute as we are in motion and ready to hit the beach – even though we are both dressed up.  I love the wind in our hair and our bodies in motion.

girls at beachThe photo on the right showed our personalities at the time.  I was very shy as a child and liked to be quiet and Cindy was very outgoing with a zeal and zest for life — even as a very young girl.

This picture captures both of us and who we were at the time.

Since these photos were taken, we have taken many, many other pictures at this favorite location.  We have them throughout our growing up years and with our own children.

Last summer, we took pictures of the two of us sitting on the seawall with our mother.  Special times and special pictures!

I wonder what our next wonderful pictures will be?  Will they be at this much-loved beach or somewhere else?  It will be fun to find out!

Ready For Summer!

CATES_at_MBThis month has been a crazy busy one for me.  How about you?

There has been so much to do for a while now.  Hopefully all of that will soon wind down with summer coming!

Can you believe the first day of summer is on Monday with Memorial Day?  Actually it isn’t the first official day of summer but does start the time. Pools open and people get out their boats to take to the lake.  It’s a wonderful time of year!

With many schools starting in mid-August, the summer is now a lot shorter than when I was in school. I remember three months of summer back when I was in high school.  The summers seemed to last forever and did from early June until after Labor Day when we went back.

There has been talk in Tennessee of changing the starting date of school back to September.  I do hope that is done!

I do so love the summer and all of the fun to be had!  Days at the pool or lake, trips to the library and local museums, or doing whatever we feel like.  YEAH!  I just hope it isn’t too humid.  But, in East Tennessee, that is part of the summer.  Time to get used to that!

What I especially like about the summer is going to the beach.  I have been fortunate to go each summer of Ian’s life to our favorite beach — Mission Beach, California (which I have written a lot about).  It has been fun to spend time with our family and see our friends each summer.  The ones there have seen him grow from an 8-month-old to now 5 1/2-year-old.

SANYO DIGITAL CAMERAFive years in a row for mostly a month visit has been an amazing gift and real pleasure!  I feel totally spoiled and have loved each and every minute!  Above is one picture of us when Ian was 2 years old.  To the left is from last summer when he was playing on the sand.

Unfortunately this summer, we won’t be able to go.  That is a real bummer and something that saddens me greatly.  However, we will make the best of our other activities that we will be doing.

Each time I go to the beach, it is so relaxing and brings back so many memories of my childhood.  I hate I will miss it, but have so many pictures of fun in years past to enjoy.

We can’t do everything that we want and this summer is one of those things.  Perhaps, I will instead go to the community pool to swim, go to the lake for a cookout, go to a baseball game, or simply go out for an ice cream treat.

This summer will be different but it will also be a special one since my son starts kindergarten this fall, actually in August.  My baby is grown up and ready for the next part of his life.

I must admit it is a bit tough on his mommy, but he is so ready!  I am thrilled and excited for him and all of the new things that he will be learning.  He already is a sponge and that will just increase.

Ah, summer!!  How I love it so!  I hope it will be a great one for us and for you as well!  Have fun.

I wonder what our adventures will be with this different summer!  I can’t wait to find out.

Some Random Thoughts

Hi to you!  Hope you are having a great first official day of summer!

Looks like it will be hot in a large part of the country today!  Try and stay and cool.

Our first day is so far so good.  This morning we watched a show about the Duggar family (which had 16 kids at the time of this special) as they went on a road trip to Disneyland.

It was amazing to see the stuff they took with them — just food and clothing overfilled their motor home.  They had to move some items to a separate trailer just so the motor home could go up the hill.

Ian was fascinated watching their adventures and trying to understand that many people in a family.  We’ll be enjoying a family reunion this summer with nearly that number in a small house.  So, we’ll see what it’s like.  Should be fun!!

As you know I have been working on losing weight.  This week my sister-in-law gave me a great suggestion for an exercise video.  I am going to see if I can find it.  I like being able to exercise at home or in my neighborhood so this will fit in nicely!

Over the last few weeks, I haven’t been losing very much weight, but I have noticed that my body’s shape is changing.  And for that I am happy.  Some of my clothes are fitting better and are more comfortable.

I have to remember that the changes aren’t only on the scale.  In addition, the exercise is getting easier and I can do things for a longer period of time.  My baby steps seem to be working!

This week, my husband has made Ian a house out of a cardboard box.  They added a mailbox, doorknob, hook for a jacket inside, and a lock.  And, Ian has keys.

He is having a great time with his house.  And, learning the responsibility of keeping up with his keys is really important.  He has drawn a few pictures on the walls — one of a big truck and the other of clouds in the sky — including frames.

The guy time has been great for them and also for me.

Hope you have a great rest of the week!  Please share some of what you are doing this summer!  I would love to hear from you!

Here is a fun quote for you: “A perfect summer day is when the sun is shining, the breeze is blowing, the birds are singing, and the lawn mower is broken.”  ~James Dent

Friday, Friday!

Today is Friday, June 15 — halfway through June already.  Where has this year gone?  It seems to have flown by.

And, we are days away from the official start of summer!  The summer solstice!!  It is already summer to me.  I always enjoy this time of year.

It has been a few weeks since I have written about things I am thankful for.  Life has been quite busy for me but I still have a thankful heart.

Some recent highlights were:

  • Having Ian choose his first hairstyle that he wanted and his excitement over his haircut.  That is a first!
  • Enjoying a fun birthday lunch with my sister (the birthday girl) and family.
  • Walking with family and taking great pictures.
  • Checking out another book from the library by a favorite author.
  • Enjoying a meal with my husband and son.
  • Planning for a trip to the beach.
  • Seeing Ian’s excitement at his first baseball game.
  • Having my weight stay the same (that is better than gaining) over a few crazy weeks.
  • Knowing it’s the time of year for fireflies, ice cream trucks, swimming, and later nights.

What were some of your highlights?  Please share them with me and the other readers.

Hope you have a great day and weekend!!!

Summer Time

Hope you are having a wonderful summer!

I have always liked the summer. There is more time to slow down and enjoy life and get outside and be active.  This summer, we are enjoying walks in the evening around the neighborhood while Ian rides his tricycle.  It’s still early enough, that the humidity isn’t too high yet.

Later in the summer we have to either be inside in the air conditioning or enjoying some body of water.  We enjoy the chance to go swimming at the pool, be on the lake and a friend’s new boat, or go to the beach.

Not everyone likes the beach, but I always have.  There is something magical and calming to me about the ebb and flow of the waves.  When I am stressed and can stand and look at that water and feel the breeze and breath deeply, it just calms me down.  How about you?

In fact, the background picture on my computer is a photo of me at the shoreline.  Each time I look at that picture, I smile and remember a fun time and marvel at the beauty of the sun, waves, and sand.

Over the past five years, I have been fortunate to go with my family to two very different but equally fabulous beaches.

The first was on Hutchinson Island in Fort Pierce, Florida.  This was the first beach that Ian went to as a baby.  He was fascinated at the feel of the sand in his fingers and on his toes.  Here he is exploring this beach.

This is a great shelling beach and I have found a vase full of gorgeous treasures.  Each time I went to the sand, I came back with my pockets full of shells.

Only residents and visitors would go to this beach since it was right in front of a community.  So, there were times when we were the only ones there and that was quite special.

Also, the water was a lovely turquoise color and the waves were calm enough to have Ian get his feet wet as he got a little bit older.

The second beach is Mission Beach in San Diego, California (pictured at the top of this blog).  I have told you about this beach many times.  This is the one my family went to as I was growing up.  I have photos of when I was about 6 months old at this beach.  And, there is a picture of me crawling very quickly towards the water.

At this beach, there is a lot of seaweed, very strong waves which are great for surfing or body surfing, and chilly water.  It is perfect for a hot summer day to take a dip in this water.  You come out feeling reinvigorated.

I have always liked a sunset into the ocean and have seen hundreds of them over the years.  And, I grew up wearing a sweater at sunset since it always cooled down just a little.

The first time that Ian went with me to this beach was incredibly special and I realized how blessed I was that we now have four generations of our family who have enjoyed that same sand and surf.

Whatever your favorites are in the summer, I hope you can enjoy them to the fullest!

Happy summer.

A Swimming Adventure

Yesterday was a major milestone for Ian and I am a very proud Mommy!

We went swimming at the pool in my parents’ neighborhood and Ian swam by himself for the first time!

He was wearing swim trunks and one of those floating vests or life vest and Little Swimmers (so there were no accidents in the pool).

He was standing at the steps into the pool with my mom when he discovered his float helped hold him in the water.  Seeing the twinkle in his eye was a wonderful thing! After that he was ready to go.

When he started moving around on his own, he told me “Mommy, stop, let go of me.”  “Okay Ian, but I am still staying with you,” I said.

So we then went around the pool as quickly as his little legs could kick.  He was truly excited and proud of himself that he was able to do something like the big kids.  It was a real honor to watch!!

We’ll still need swimming lessons and need to work on keeping his head about the water, but this was a major first step in his confidence.

Unfortunately my camera battery was dead so I couldn’t get a photo or on video.  But, I will keep it in my memory for a long, long time!  My sweet boy is growing up!!
