10 things I love

GEDSC DIGITAL CAMERAI often think of people when I say the word love, but there are some things and activities that I love to do and participate in.  And, some things that I am privileged to have.

Here is a list of 10 of them.  I will be writing another list again soon.

  1. To laugh.  I have loved laughing for as long as I can remember.  I love to hear Kirk and Ian laugh as well.  Funny TV shows or a funny movie can make me laugh.  Also, jokes and stories from family and friends make me laugh. Earlier today we watched the movie, “Mom’s Night Out.”  It was silly, funny, and I truly enjoyed it.  When I was younger, my sister, two dear friends, and I created a club in which we loved to laugh and often did.  We knew the importance of being silly and for that, I am forever grateful.
  2. Having a garage on a cold and snowy day, or on a day when it’s pouring rain.  I have lived a few places with no garage but instead a parking space. That is fine on a sunny day, but when it’s 8 degrees outside, it is so nice to not have to wait for 5 minutes while the car warms up.  Earlier this week, we enjoyed the benefit of our garage. Our garage truly makes me feel spoiled.
  3. Cub Scouts and sharing that with Ian.  I have several family members who have been in scouting for a while so I was aware of it.  However, being involved has been more than I could have imagined.  Ian has learned a lot, has grown and blossomed, and made some great friends.  The first year the parents are required to be involved and I have really enjoyed it too.  Soon, we will be doing the Pinewood Derby Race.  That will also be lots of fun. The photo is a scouting outing to the bowling alley.
  4. Stories.  I can’t imagine my life without words and stories. I grew up listening to stories created by my grandfather and absolutely loved them.  He was an amazing influence on my love of stories.  He was also a great writer who I have learned a lot from.  I think my writing is similar to his and that makes me smile.  Ian is quite good at making stories up as well.  That makes me super happy.
  5. Writing. This is something else that I cannot imagine not having the opportunity to do.  As I mentioned when I started this blog, I didn’t write at all for about a year after Ian was born.  Then one day, I realized that something was missing.  So I starting writing again and that helped.  My outlet of getting my thoughts and feelings out there was again in business!  I have worked as a writer and now really enjoy blogging and doing other writing.  And, I am working on ideas for a few books.  It is one of my dreams to have a book or two published.
  6. Reading. My life has been so enriched by the love of books and reading.  I also like magazines and newspapers as well.  I am thrilled that Ian too loves to read.  We started him out very young and are so happy that we did.  Now seeing him read and listening to a special story is a great way to spend some special time.  Some of my favorite books as a child were “The Little House on the Prairie” series, “The Secret Garden,” and almost anything by Dr. Seuss.
  7. Watching TV – both current shows and classics.  I am a TV girl for sure.  I like a variety of shows and always watch the news in the morning and evenings.  I am one who follows a few shows very faithfully.  Some of my favorites are “The Good Wife,”  “Madam Secretary,” “Downton Abbey,” “Chicago Fire,” “Magnum, P.I.,” “Diagnosis Murder,” “Murder She Wrote,” “Hot In Cleveland,” “Hart to Hart,” “Scorpion,” and “Mike and Molly.”  I like a wide variety and enjoy tuning in.
  8. Soap Operas and magazine.  Okay, I will admit that along with reading and writing and liking PBS shows, I also like my soaps.  I have been watching “Days Of Our Lives” for years.  This show will celebrate 50 years of being on the air soon and that is cool.  Generations can watch the never-ending saga and drama.  It may be repetitive at times but I still like it.  And, 20 years ago, Mom and I got to visit the studio, so that was a lot of fun.  Now there are four daytime soaps left. I keep up with them in the Soap Opera Digest.
  9. Photography and photo gifts. I love pictures and enjoy capturing special moments. My sister has made me several fabulous photo books — one of the first year of Ian’s life and then from our special vacation spot.  My mother has made several great calendars — the most recent of our childhood home.   I always have my camera at family gatherings and also try to shoot nature and other things that interest me.  And, I love old photos of our family and friends.  It is so fun to look back at my grandparent’s honeymoon dessert photo, my sister and brother and I in our 70s or 80s finest, and a very old photo from childhood of us sitting on Grandpa’s lap for a special story.
  10. Singing and dancing.  Music has always been in my life and I love that.  I love to sing and dance.  Whether it’s the radio, singing hymns at church, or the choir, I love singing.  This season of “American Idol” has some good talent.  I haven’t watched this in a while but have enjoyed the first few audition shows.  For dancing, I like the 80s and 90s dance music the best — “Vogue,” “The Electric Slide,” and “Push It” are some of my faves.  I also like a few by Earth, Wind and Fire, Stevie Wonder, En Vogue, C&C Music Factory, Janet Jackson, and the list goes on.

Some of my listing may seem trivial or silly.  However, I have learned in life to find things that I am happy with and that I like.  And, I love what I love.  I hope that you do as well.  After all, we all have our favorites.  Some are sports fanatics, others like the soaps, some like reality shows, and others like talk radio.

What is on your list?  I would love to hear about some of the things that you love!  Please share them with me and our readers.

Five Minute Friday – Story

5minutefridayHi and Happy Friday!  TGIF!!

The word for Today’s Five Minute Friday is Story.

Here are the rules:

1. Write for 5 minutes flat – no editing, no over thinking, no backtracking.
2. Link back here and invite others to join in.
3. And then absolutely, no ifs, ands or buts about it, you need to visit the person who linked up before you & encourage them in their comments. Seriously. That is, like, the rule. And the fun. And the heart of this community…

Now GO …

First thing I think of is the old spiritual, “I love to tell the story.  ’twill be my theme in glory to tell the old story of Jesus and his love.”

This is especially comforting this week as we found out a classmate of my sister’s died this week.  So young and he will be missed.

SRP.28_Patti.Dick.and.Artha.1986I also think of stories and the ones that I grew up listening to from my grandfather.  Here is an old picture of me with my favorite story-teller and his lovely bride, my grandma.

Currently, I am reading a book that a friend of mine wrote.  It is a great story and one that I am truly enjoying — and finding a hard time putting down!  She did a great job and I am so impressed that she published it.

I also like to tell my own stories and hope to work on a new one very soon.  This week I found out that I am a direct descendant of a passenger on the Mayflower.   I was beyond excited to find this out.  This person was a young woman and sounds absolutely fascinating.

Can you imagine how different her life must have been from a young woman today?  It boggles the mind to think of the changes since then.

In addition to this story, I have a children’s book in mind.  Hopefully I can work on both of these items very soon.  I do so love to write and like a variety of ways to do so.  One of my favorites is on this blog when I write about whatever is on my mind.

I can’t imagine my life without being able to tell stories.  And, my son already has a gift of telling stories.  He has drawn a few that I will have to share sometime.  He also has told me some great stories before bedtime.

Now…. STOP!

I think both of us received this ability from my grandpa.  He told fantastic stories orally to us, and also did a great job writing a variety of items and slices of his life.  He is truly my inspiration.

I wonder what stories I will find to inspire me today.  I so look forward to the discovery and the process of writing them!

July 23 – I Drew This!

POD_July.23__I.Drew.ThisToday I have Tuesday Tunes and another photo for the July Photo-A-Day Challenge.  For July 23, the challenge is I Drew This!

As my regular readers know, the phrase “I Still Wonder Where Rainbows Come From” inspired the name of my blog and my writings.

My grandfather was a storyteller.  The quote is something often said by one of grandpa’s characters.  This character was always looking for where rainbows come from.  He  would regularly get into trouble during his quest and then need his friends to help bail him out.

Hearing my grandpa weave his tales was fun and an amazing gift.  I thought everyone knew about this layered character.  Later in my life, I found out these were special for my family and our friends.

At the end of each story, this character would scratch his head and say, “I still wonder where rainbows come from.”   This drawing celebrates that.

I have closed quite a few of my blogs with “I still wonder.”   I mention that about the topic I am writing on.  I want to keep this mindset of wondering and learning in my life and my son’s life as well.

I have always liked these stories and wondering about many, many things.  I also know and love that friends and family will help me through the tough times.  This was a great message that my grandpa illustrated in vivid and active stories.

And, I have always loved rainbows!  I remember learning the colors in school – ROYGBIV — Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, Indigo, Violet.  These are all here — although the orange is tough to see.

I wonder what new item will inspire me next.  I so look forward to finding out!  May you find and enjoy your quest!

For Tuesday’s Tunes, I wanted to mention the latest in music that Ian has been singing.

This morning he said, “I love Bon Jovi.”  And, he has been singing a few of the songs!

We have a greatest hits CD which includes the great song, It’s My Life.  It includes several parts where Richie uses a special microphone to make modulated sounds.

Ian likes the wah-wahs that he does.  And, he loves to sing the words as well. I love it since they have been one of my favorite bands for years.  I saw them in concert in 1988 and would love to again.

Yesterday, he pretended two of his Hot Wheels firetrucks were members of the band.  One was Jon Bon Jovi and the other was Richie Sambora.  And, his other cars said they enjoyed the concert.

Our family has a new generation which loves this group!  Isn’t that great?

Hope you have a wonderful Tuesday!

We love rainbows!

Ian's rainbowYesterday, Ian and I weren’t feeling so great.  Our allergies were giving us fits.

Instead of our usual Sunday of going to church, lunch out with family, and then a lazy day, we simply had the lazy day.

In the morning, we made pancakes and bacon with fruit.  Ian and I had a Mickey Mouse and Minnie Mouse pancake and Kirk had a snowman pancake, among the usual round pancakes.  These were made simply with the spoon and the batter and were quite fun!  We had fun making food together, eating it, and then cleaning up.  Ian is quite the helper in the kitchen!

We then read, watched tv, and colored and drew pictures.  We were inspired to draw a few photos of rainbows.  Ian has learned the 7 colors of them as I had (ROYGBIV – Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, Indigo, and Violet).

Can I just tell you how fun it was to color and draw?!  A friend of mine has a coloring book and encourages other adults to color when they come to visit him.  This is a great idea since it is relaxing and fun to do.  After all, crayons and coloring pencils aren’t just for kids!!!

Hope you enjoy the rainbow that Ian drew and that we added the pot of gold too, as well as the one with our dear Willie’s quote — “I Still Wonder Where Rainbows Come From.”Wonder-Rainbow
