July 11 – I Wore This / Happy Birthday Kirk!

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAHappy birthday to my husband Kirk!  Today is his birthday!!   YEAH!

We are busy for a lot of the day, but there will still be time for our family to have fun and celebrate together.

Here are the three of us several years ago at the beach!  We had fun on this trip and have on several others.  And, we always love being home together and hanging out!

To my love, my best friend, confidant, and wonderful father to our son, I love you so very much!

I have enjoyed this journey around the sun with you.  There have been ups and downs, good and bad, and I am so glad you are my traveling companion!!  Thanks for your love, laughter, and support!

To many more wonderful years together!!  I love you and wish you a wonderful and very special day!!!  Happy Birthday.

Today’s Photo-A-Day challenge is I Wore This.

GEDSC DIGITAL CAMERAHere is a picture of my jewelry for the day along with a party hat that we bought for Kirk’s birthday and for our nephew Zachary who had a birthday yesterday.

We celebrated Zach’s 15th birthday at a wonderful dinner out and birthday cookie.  He was a baby the year we got married.  My time flies!!   Tonight we’ll celebrate with a dinner out for Kirk and some wonderful cake and candles.

Also in the picture are two of my favorite necklaces — one that states SRP LUV and the other is a picture of our family’s beach house with a rainbow to it.

As you may know, I LOVE Rainbows and grew up listening to a story about an elf trying to figure out where they come from.  This story was the inspiration for my blog.

These two items of jewelry are very special.  I made the Luv necklace with beads and material from a favorite bead store.  My sister gave me the necklace of the beach house.  On the other side of this necklace is a great picture of our grandparents.  They are the ones who started our love of this house and neighborhood which, thankfully, is still in the family.

I also have some turquoise pieces, my (pretty new) watch and some lovely shell earrings that my sister made for me.  I do love my accessories, as my friends and family can attest to.   They are, to me, what make an outfit!

I also want to wish my brother-in-law Cody a Happy Birthday today!  May you have time to relax and have fun!

My husband and my sister’s husband have the same birthday — just a few years apart.  How cool is that?

A few birthday quotes for the birthday boys!!!

My Family Rocks!

girls at beachI don’t know about you but I have a fabulous family!!!

Yesterday was a luncheon celebration for my sister’s birthday.  Her name is Cindy and she rocks.  Here we are as kids.  I wanted to post this picture again since it is one of my favorites of the two of us!

We had a great time at a new restaurant.  I had a Cobb salad and fried green tomatoes — yummy.  Others had burgers or other salads.

It just so happens that this place is owned by two guys from my high school class.  I thought that was cool.

Anyway, we had 17 people at the table for lunch and it was fantastic.  My parents were there as well as me with Kirk and Ian.  Also, there were my sister and her hubby and two kids; my brother, his wife, and two kids, and my cousin, her hubby and one of her two kids and my aunt.

It was a table of love and happiness.  And many great memories!

I enjoyed talking to my brother and sister-in-law about their vacation they were returning from, catching up with all of the kids and their summer plans, my cousin and sister about a variety of items, and chatting with everyone.

We also took quite a few pictures as we always do!!

We enjoyed a great lunch, sang happy birthday, my sister blew out her candles, and then we enjoyed a delicious cake with yellow flowers.

My family has always made a big deal about birthdays.  We celebrate each member of the family and that has always been special.

It was great to visit with everyone and have such fun!!

I hope that you too have a rockin’ family!!

Happy Birthday Cindy!

Today, June 8, is my sister’s birthday!

Happy Birthday to you

Happy Birthday dear Cindy

Happy Birthday to you!

I decided to post a few of my favorite pictures of the two of us through the years.

The first one is the two of us on the seawall in San Diego.  Cindy is the blond who is ready to take on the world.  I am the brunette who was very shy.  Aren’t we cute?

Cindy.Patti.on.slideThis next one is the two of us on the slide in the backyard of our childhood home.  I love the smiles on both of our faces!

the kids.jpgNext are a few with our brother and parents.  We had a lot of fun together growing up!SRP.24.Truex.Family

Truex3kidsI also included Cindy, Richmond, and me on my wedding day, as well as a picture from last year.  3 kids

There are many other pictures of me with my awesome sister, but I think that is enough for this posting.

Cindy, may you have a wonderful birthday with many blessings!  And, may you have another fabulous trip around the sun!

Love you and hope to celebrate with you!

SANYO DIGITAL CAMERAI wonder what amazing adventures are in store for you in the next year!  It will be fun to discover them, won’t it?!

Happy Birthday Rich!

candlesToday is my friend Rich’s birthday!

Happy Birthday to you dear Rich!  I hope that you have a great day!

Rich is a great guy and has his own business.  He can fix about anything and is smart.  He loves Nascar, his wife, family, and friends, and to tinker around with a variety of things at his house.  He is a lot of fun to be around too!!

Many years ago, before I met Kirk, Rich nicknamed me Patti Cakes, and used to call me that for a while.  Little did he know that my name eventually could be Patti Cates.  Notice just one letter is different — the K which starts Kirk’s name. Interesting, wouldn’t you say?

I have known Rich and his wife Karen for almost 20 years.  Karen and I worked together in the same office for four years.  During that time, we got together a lot.  I was single at the time and the two of them always made me feel welcome and not like I was a third wheel.  I have always appreciate that about them.

One time we went to their beach house and had so much fun.  We talked the entire way in the car since it was a road trip, and then continued when we got there.  It is nice to not run out of things to discuss.  For a time, Rich was the big brother that I never had.

After I met Kirk, the four of us would get together and have a blast.  It was great that all of us got along well with each other and liked each other. That is rare and I so appreciate it!

Rich also tells great stories and jokes.  He is always fun to talk to.  I haven’t seen him or Karen in a while and miss them both.  We now live in different states so it is more of a challenge to get together.

We do, however, keep in touch, so that is great.  Hopefully we can plan a get together soon!!

Happy Birthday to you Rich!  May you have as fun a day as you are!  Love you both!!!

March Birthday Madness

birthday cakeTis the time of year for March Madness.

For a basketball fan, this is the best time of year.  Are you a fan?  Are you loving all things hoops? Like come from behind wins and the occasional upset?

We are almost to the Sweet Sixteen (top 16 college teams) and then on to the top 8, the Final Four, and finally a winner.

For my family, it’s March Birthday Madness.  Well, not so much madness, but I wanted to tie it into the events of the month.  It is certainly March Birthday Celebration, but that doesn’t have the same ring to it.

Between my husband’s side of the family and my side of the family, we have 8 people who celebrate birthdays in March.  It is always a busy and occasionally very pricey month, but also a fun one!

On Kirk’s side, we celebrate his mother’s birthday, his sister Anne, his brother’s wife Diane, and his oldest brother Pete.  On my side of the family, we celebrate my brother’s wife Beckie, my cousin Dennis, Dennis’s son Justin, and my sister’s daughter Gussie.

I am naming them this way so you know the connection to the two of us.  Unfortunately, we can’t always be with all of them to celebrate but we do always remember them fondly.

This month, Gussie is 13 years old and Justin is 12 years old.  I remember when both of them were babies and now she is a teen and he is one year from being a teenager.  Where did the time go?

These 8 people are very important in our lives as are the rest of the family.  We love them all and are excited to celebrate them!

I also have several friends who celebrate birthdays this month.  Happy Birthday to them as well.

To all of you my friends and family, I want to sing,

  • Happy Birthday to You
  • Happy Birthday to You
  • Happy Birthday Dear Loved One
  • Happy Birthday to You!

You are all loved, thought of, and celebrated!  Have another great trip around the sun!!

I wonder if I will get to celebrate with all of my people?  I doubt it, but sure wish I could!

Happy Birthday Beckie!

SANYO DIGITAL CAMERAToday, March 7, is my sister-in-law Beckie’s birthday!

Happy Birthday to you dear Beckie!  I wanted to wish you the best and hope you have a wonderful day!

Here Beckie and I are pictured during a lunch last summer at the beach after family pictures were taken.  That is why we are both in white blouses and blue jeans.

We both enjoyed lobster during this fabulous meal.  I had lobster chowder and salad and Beckie had lobster tacos.  We were able to see the ocean as we ate and had a great time!  What a treat it was!!

Beckie is a great person and so much fun.  We get along really well and always have so much to chat about.  Like me, she loves to write, read, and sing.  And, she is great at playing the piano.

I am so glad that my brother married her so we have her as part of our family!  They are a great couple and have two wonderful kids.  Ian loves to spend time with his cousins, Uncle Richmond and Aunt Beckie (and the rest of the family as well).

PattiBeckie2In July 2012, we had a great time while at the beach.  There were many chances to visit, eat together, enjoy laying out, have the kids play together, talk, and just enjoy the down time.

We went to a roller coaster and park one day and had a great time.  This picture is from that day.

Since the beginning we have clicked and been able to get along.  That is rare and something I truly do appreciate.

A few quotes about birthdays for you:

  • “A birthday is just the first day of another 365-day journey around the sun.  Enjoy the trip.”  ~ Author Unknown
  • “Growing old is mandatory; growing up is optional.”  ~ Chili Davis
  • “You’re not 40, you’re eighteen with 22 years experience.”  ~ Author Unknown
  • “The secret of staying young is to live honestly, eat slowly, and lie about your age.”  ~ Lucille Ball

Beckie, may the Lord bless you on your birthday!  Enjoy and hope to see you again really soon.

Happy Birthday Grams!!

DSC06130Tonight my family and I are celebrating my grandmother’s 92nd birthday!  Is that not the coolest?

Her birthday was actually earlier this week but this is when we are celebrating.

This is a picture of me with Grams 6 years ago (when she was 86 — she looks great, don’t you think?).  We were at the Tennessee Smokies baseball game with my parents and my aunt.  It was a fun evening!!  We went again this summer with all of them and Ian went as well.  It was fun to add another generation to our fun.  Unfortunately my husband wasn’t able to come with us.

Grams (aka Fran) is quite a gal! She loves having the family together to celebrate events.  We make big deals about everyone’s birthday and hers is truly a party!

Since her 90th birthday, for her birthday, we have been getting everyone together in the church fellowship hall, have enjoyed barbecue, baked beans, cole slaw (her favorite), cake and some wine along with it.

I enjoy this family tradition and especially enjoy celebrating her life. We will laugh and tell tales, enjoy being together and I will thank my lucky stars (actually my Lord) for being a part of this family.

Grams likes a good bottle of wine, real cheese, a sunset over the ocean, sailing, gardening, reading, and being with her loved ones.  She was born in 1921 — one year into the roaring 20s.  Life was quite different when she came into the world.

I remember a conversation once with her about the jobs available to a woman when she started working.  There were only four — teacher, nurse, secretary, and librarian.  She chose secretary and worked for many years.

She worked in the era when people could smoke at their desks, took shorthand, dialed a rotary phone, and if you made a mistake in typing your letter, you had to reset the paper and mimeograph paper for the copies.  No computers and backspaces available then.  I don’t know if I could have done this work like she did.

Since none of these were my chosen profession, I am glad that times have changed since then.  I do like that women have so many more career options.  I appreciate women like my grandmother who blazed the trail for me.

She had some tough times in her life, but always managed to pick herself up and carry on.  Grams is an inspiration to me.  She doesn’t let people or circumstances get her down but instead plows ahead.

She became a widow way to young when my grandfather passed away suddenly.  I never knew him but have heard so much about him my entire life that I feel that I know him.  Although he is in Heaven, he is still part of the family and our special angel!

For as long as I can remember, Grams hasn’t been shy about sharing her opinion — whether you wanted to hear it or not.  Sometimes not, but she had kernels of wisdom.  She was, however, usually blunt.

Last summer I had some time to talk to her one-on-one at the beach.  She came with us to the family beach house for a short time and it was great! Hearing her opinion on a variety of subjects was really nice.

One evening, I was on the beach with her, my father (her son), and my son.  She wanted to get her feet wet so we all went down to enjoy that moment with her.  And, let me tell you something, it was amazingly special!!!  Having the four generations there with our feet in the sand and surf is unforgettable!  We tried taking pictures but they didn’t turn out very well.

I hope to have other special moments with her.  I cherish each one that I now have and am so thankful that Ian is getting to know her.  For her birthday, he has chosen some of his special items to give to her.

We love you Grams very much!  We wish you a very Happy Birthday!  May you enjoy your 9th decade as much as the rest!

Happy Birthday Richmond!

SRP.33.Patti_Richmond.1990Today, December 28, is my brother Richmond’s birthday!  He is 40 years old today!

Here is one of my favorite pictures of the two of us from 1990 at Mission Beach California!  Don’t you love our matching hairdos?

Happy Birthday to you dear Bro!!  I love you so much.  It’s great to have you in the 40s now!  Welcome to the club!

I am 5 years older than my brother.  Throughout our growing up years, there were plenty of conflicts and problems.  And, I remember when I went off to college, he was still a teenager in junior high (before middle school).

Despite some issues through the years and our age difference, we found a way to forgive each other and move on.  Now, we are good friends!  I am so proud of us for doing that!

And, as we were going through the growing pains, I told my parents that Richmond would one day be a fine adult and would impress all of us (or something like that since I don’t exactly remember).

SANYO DIGITAL CAMERATurns out, I was right.  He has grown into a very fine young man.  He has a good job that he enjoys, a great wife who I am also close to, and two great kids.  He is a blessing!!

I love you my dear brother and am so thankful to have you in my life!!  Here we are this summer in San Diego again!  We do like our family time there.

Richmond loves life and his family and friends.  He is crazy about his wife and two kids and has a great time with them.  He is a huge U2 fan and knows all of their songs by heart.  He also loves to read, watch television and movies and can quote from his favorites.  In addition, he likes sports — especially the San Diego Padres (just like me).  He is fun to be with and I love him with all my heart!

Richmond, I wish you a wonderful birthday today!  May you be surrounded by love of family and friends!  And, do some things that you want to do!

I look forward to seeing you tonight for your birthday dinner!  Love you lots.

Happy Birthday Tammy!

Tomorrow, December 5, is the birthday of one of my nearest and dearest friends, Tammy.

SANYO DIGITAL CAMERAI guess you could say she is my oldest friend.  We met in elementary school and have been friends ever since.  Here we are after some time at the beach last summer.

When we were little, Tammy and I and our sisters Sonya and Cindy formed a club!  The four us loved to laugh so we thought we’d expand that into this sisterhood.  We lived around the corner from each other so we had lots of play time.

One day I will never forget was in third grade.  Tammy and I were talking in the class.  Our teacher, Mr. Toler, sent us to the closet since we were in trouble.  Instead of being quiet, we moved all of the backpacks out of the bottom of the closet and then continued talking.  I think after that we were sent to the principal’s office.

When we were in the 8th grade, Tammy and her family moved away because of her father’s transfer of work.  For a young girl like me who was painfully shy, this was devastating!  I remember when I found out and how sad I was.

But we have managed to keep in touch and stay friends over the years!  Isn’t that cool?  Even though we don’t see each other all of the time, we still can pick up from where we left off and always have lots to talk about!

When Kirk and I married, I had hoped that Tammy was going to be able to come to the wedding, but she told me over the phone, no.  Then what do you know, she surprised me and showed up on the day before our wedding!  My family was in on it and they all pulled one over on me.

I remember how happy and truly blown away I was.  It took me a while to compose myself after crying some happy tears.  My oldest friend was there on my wedding day.  If only I had known she would be there, I would have had her as one of my bridesmaids.

Now, we are both married and have kids – I have one and she has four amazing kids.  Three girls and a boy.  This past summer we saw them at the beach and the boys had fun playing together and we had fun catching up.

It is never enough time but I am always blessed to have time with my dear friend and see her with her precious family.  The kids are well-behaved and fun to be with.  Tammy’s oldest daughter looks like she did as a child.  And the other kids look like some of Tammy’s sisters.

Having a friend for most of your life is a real and amazing blessing.  I thank God for bringing Tammy into my life and for keeping her there for all of these years.

Tammy, may you have a wonderful birthday!  Love you my friend.  And never forget, AGADKTGA!!!!!!!!!!!

Happy Late Birthday Pam

Yesterday was my cousin Pam’s birthday!  I was late on my posting since I wasn’t on the computer at all yesterday.

Pam, so sorry this is late!  I did think about you all day yesterday and hoped you had a fabulous day.

Pictured at left and from left (in 2006) are me, Pam, my sister Cindy, and my sister-in-law Beckie.  These three gals are my sisters and I am so blessed to have all of them in my life!!!

My cousin Pam is one of my favorite people!  We have been friends for as long as I can remember.  Growing up, Pam was my cool cousin from California! I always looked forward to hearing about her adventures and seeing her in the summers when the families would get together.

We had such fun together in the 1980s and before and since.  Here we are pictured in the 1990s, I think.  There have been so many funny pictures taken over the years with great grins and poses that I am not sure.  We always have enjoyed being hams and laughing.

She is an awesome mother to two wonderful girls who I had the pleasure seeing grow up and getting to know.  They are awesome just like their mother.  And, her hubby, Bob, is funny and great to be around.  She has an amazing family who I also love very much!!

I will never forget the first time that my husband Kirk met Pam and Bob.  We went to a Mexican restaurant in Old Town San Diego.  The two guys cracked up and yelled at each other as if they’d known each other forever.  I was thrilled to see how well they got along.  It makes me laugh to think about!

Now, Pam is a grandmother to a beautiful girl.  Her oldest daughter is a great mommy!  I can learn so much from Pam during Ian’s growing up years.  Pam is less than 2 weeks older than me.  We have been close for a long time.

Pam has met Ian and is great with him, and so is Bob.  Ian also got to meet their daughters, but not their granddaughter yet.  Hopefully that will be soon!

It has been several years since I have seen my cousin and I really do miss her!  I do, however, love the fact that when we see each other, it is as if no time has passed.  We pick up as we’d seen each other the previous week, not three of four years ago.  It is awesome.  I hope that you have someone like that in your life!!

I love ya cuz!!  And, can’t wait to see you in April of next year!  YEAH!!!!  It will be so much fun.  So glad you had a great birthday!
