Happy Birthday dear Kirk!

Happy Birthday to you, happy birthday to you!  Happy Birthday dear Kirk, Happy Birthday to you!

Ian and I sang that to Kirk this morning and he enjoyed it.  We both love Kirk very much.  “Happy Birthday Dad,” Ian said.

Kirk is the love of my life, my partner, an amazing father to our son, and such fun to be with. I enjoy our family moments and special times. I love our family traditions.

I love how Kirk makes me laugh, and I so appreciate when he comforts me and supports me. He is wonderful.

Happy Birthday to you dear Kirk!  Have a great one.

The Blessing of My Brother

SRP.33.Patti_Richmond.1990Today is my brother Richmond’s birthday.  Happy Birthday to you Dear Richmond!!!  I love you and am so proud of you.  You truly are a blessing to me. (Here we are in our matching tans and hairdos in the early 1990s.)

Today we had planned to celebrate with you and I was so bummed that we couldn’t.  Being sick with bronchitis certainly put a damper on those plans.  We are, however, with you in spirit.  And hope to see you again soon.

3 kidsMy brother always makes me laugh, and he makes me smile.  He is fun to watch movies with, like “Clue” or TV shows like “Psych.”  He can quote from both of these almost verbatim.

He also is smart, a great husband and father, and a hard worker.  He works at a really nice men’s clothing store and is a terrific salesman.  He is in charge of the windows and displays.  He has a great eye for style and color.

Richmond is a great singer, likes sushi, pasta, good wine, iced sweet tea, movies, football games, comedies on television, well-made dramas, and Padres baseball.  And many other things as well.

We have had fun camping, shopping, riding in the car together, strolling at the beach, eating yummy meals together, watching our kids play, eating pizza at our town’s best pizzeria, and singing with the family. I have so many fond memories of Richmond and our sister Cindy.  We are pictured above (left to right: Cindy, Richmond, and me).

I am five years older than Richmond.  As kids, we didn’t always get along and had the usual sibling rivalry.  I love, however, that when we became adults, we decided to let that sibling stuff go.  Now we are great friends and love to be together.  We have inside jokes and funny stories.  Indeed, our relationship is a blessing.

Richmond, have a blast at your party tonight!  I will be thinking of you and smiling.  Love you and hope to see you really soon.

The Blessing of Friendship

SANYO DIGITAL CAMERAToday is the birthday of one of my oldest friends.  I don’t mean oldest by age but oldest as in the one who I have known the longest — except for family members. Happy 40-something Birthday to you dear Tammy!

My earliest memory of us being friends was in second grade.  We may have known each other before that too, but I just don’t remember.  Do you remember Tammy?

While in second grade, we had the same teacher Mr. Toler.  He was a fantastic teacher and one of the best.  One day that I still remember, we got in trouble for talking in class.  He pulled us out of the class and sent us to the coat closet to try to behave again.  Well, needless to say, we still had too much to discuss.  The punishment didn’t quite work since we kept talking.  Our parents were both called I think.

In addition to talking, we have always loved to laugh.  She is one of my favorite ones to laugh with.  We liked to laugh with our younger sisters too.  The four of us had a blast together! I hope that the four of us and our families can get together soon.

One of the nicest things that Tammy ever did was surprise me by attending my wedding.  The day before the wedding, she called me and said she wished she could be there. Little did I know she was downstairs.  When she came up the stairs, I screamed and starting crying happy tears.  It was so special to have her in town for our wedding.  If I had known, I would have asked her to be in the wedding.

So that day, I had my sister, my sister-in-law, and my best friends from elementary school, high school, and college there.  Five very special women were there for the big day and that meant the world to me. I am still friends with all of them and keep in regular touch with all of them.  What an amazing blessing that is!

Long-term friendships are few and rare so I am very thankful to still be friends with Tammy.  Although we don’t see each other as much as I’d like to, we seem to always pick right back up where we left off.  And, we always have a great time.  And, Ian had a blast playing last time with her son.  Hopefully the boys can get together again.

This photo is of the two of us the last time we were together at the beach two years ago.  Tammy, hope to see you again soon!

Hope you have a wonderful birthday Tammy!  Thanks so much for the blessing of your friendship!!    And, just between us, Cindy, and Sonya, AGADKTGA!!!!!!!  GGP rock!!!

December Blessings

GEDSC DIGITAL CAMERAIt is hard to believe that it is the first day of December.  The first day of the last month of the year.  Wow, where did the time go? I love December 1st since it is my birthday.  It is and has been a very special day for me for many, many years.  My family makes a big deal out of birthdays and I love that.  We take time to celebrate each of us and our uniqueness.

Today, I feel overwhelmed with blessings!  From my fabulous weekend of love, family, thanksgiving, and great food.  We had a blast on turkey day with friends and family, ate terrific food, took some wonderful family photos, and watched one of the funniest movies ever — Clue.  There are so many great one-liners.  I just wish I had taken more pictures with my camera!

Then on Friday, Kirk, Ian, and I enjoyed being home and getting our house ready for Christmas.  We puttered around, put up the tree, hung ornaments on it, and then just vegged out.  Ian really enjoyed helping and put our manger under the tree. We stayed in our pjs all day and loved every minute of it.

GEDSC DIGITAL CAMERAOn Saturday, we hosted my birthday party with the family. Great time!  Kirk made his delicious chili and made my cake.  I ventured out that morning at 7:30 a.m. to buy our last-minute items.  Then everyone came over and we had a great time.  I received some wonderful gifts and am so very thankful for all of my loved ones. It was a special evening.

Again, I just wish I had taken more photos.  We have a silly tradition of switching the candles around on our cakes.  I don’t remember who started that or when but it is fun and keeps things lively.

Sunday, we went to church and had a great service.  The church is lovely with all of the Christmas decorations and the advent wreath and candles. Ian gave out the popcorn that people had so nicely ordered from him.  We appreciate the support for his Cub Scout troop.  We ate lunch at our house and enjoyed more of the tasty chili.  Mom and Dad stayed for most of the afternoon and Mom and I watched a fun Christmas movie.

Today, we woke up and Kirk and Ian wished me a happy birthday and sang Happy Birthday to me.  We then took Ian to school. He was ready to be back and see everyone after a long weekend.  Kirk and I will have lunch — just the two of us — and that will be fun.  Then after school, we will dine out at one of my favorite Japanese Steakhouses for dinner prior to Ian’s pack meeting.  Each Monday night is busy with Cub Scout activities and today is no exception.

The week will continue with fun and blessings with our first dinner and Advent church service on Wednesday and then assisting in Ian’s room one day this week, and plenty of other fun and adventures are to be had.

Today I am so thankful for:

  • My family who knows me so well
  • Thoughtful birthday gifts
  • Fabulous new accessories
  • Birthday cards that make me laugh and cry happy tears
  • Sipping hot tea while chatting with my mom, aunt, sister, and cousin
  • Special photos with my parents
  • Play time for Ian and his grandparents
  • Ian having a blast with his cousins
  • Laughing like crazy over a funny movie
  • The lights of our Christmas tree
  • Making a wish as a birthday candle is blown out
  • Family clumping
  • The family circle of prayer
  • Birthday wishes from friends and family
  • My faith and beliefs
  • Old photos
  • Holding hands with loved ones

I wonder if I will be able to cherish each and every minute of my special day?  I plan to do just that.  Thanks so much to all of my loved ones who are helping to make it special!  You truly do rock!!
