Throwback Thursday – Enjoying The Waves

DSC00210Hi and Happy Thursday!  Here I am with a very young Ian at the beach.  We were enjoying the sand and waves.  He was hanging on tight to my hands.  He was such a little guy but very brave to stand up against the power of the ocean waves.

Since then, he has loved being at the beach and seeing the ocean.  Like me, he enjoys putting his toes in the water and feeling the cold water on his toes and legs. This summer we did some of that again and it was such fun.

I have loved all of these years taking him to the beach in his young life.  All but two summers we have enjoyed time at the beach, which has been great.  He has loved the whole beach experience just like I always have.

There is nothing like standing at the edge of the ocean and feeling the sand in our toes and the water washing over us as the waves move back and forth.  Ian held my hand this summer as we waded up to our knees in the water.  It was as fun this year as when this photo was taken.

I also have enjoyed watching Ian play in the sand, building structures with wet and dry sand, being buried by his cousins and then popping out again, running around on the sand, throwing a frisbee, and having a wonderful time.

We love the beach, the ocean, and all of the fun with our family and friends.  There is nothing like a trip to our favorite beach.  I am blessed to have Ian be the fourth generation in my family to enjoy these trips.

These words sum up my love for the ocean, the sand, and the waves:

  • I love the ocean.
  • I love the smell of the salt and water.
  • I love the sound of the surf and people playing.
  • I love the feel of the sand in my toes.
  • I love the cold water washing over my feet and legs.
  • I love watching the waves come into the shore and back out again.
  • I love how the sun dances on the water during the day.
  • I love the vastness of the ocean and the power of the waves.
  • I have loved the ocean since I was about 6 months old and crawled right to it.  It has always drawn me to it.
  • I love this beach in Mission Beach, California.  I have had the privilege to go many, many times throughout my life.
  • I love going to the beach with my husband, our son, my parents, siblings, cousins, nieces and nephews, aunts and uncles, and friends.
  • I love that our family continues to gather at the ocean’s edge and at the beach house.
  • I love that all things about the beach experience have been a part of my life for so long. I feel truly blessed.
  • I love the memories of decades of visiting this beach.
  • I love this Pacific Ocean.

I wonder when we can next enjoy our fun at the beach?  I hope it will be soon!  I don’t like to be away very long.

Throwback Thursday – Beach Fun

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Hi and Happy Thursday!  In honor of my sister’s birthday in a few days, I wanted to post a photo of us from 2009.  I decided to post one of us with a few other people.  We love the beach, so I thought she would enjoy this photo.

From left is my brother, sister-in-law, me, my hubby, and my sister on the end.  Her hubby was not in the picture.  We were sitting on the seawall at sunset at Mission Beach, CA.  This is our favorite place to watch and many, many family photos have been taken here.

This summer we look forward to another beach trip and I am so looking forward to it, as I know my siblings are!  We will be there for a family reunion and will see cousins, and aunt and uncles and dear friends!

There is so much I love about the beach and especially this beach.  I have been honored to share many memories with friends and family.  And, now I love seeing Ian’s generation enjoy it as much I always did growing up.

A few highlights of the beach for me are:

  • Delicious fish tacos
  • Breakfast on our front porch
  • Our tiny beach cottage filled with love
  • Laughs with family and friends
  • Bike rides with family
  • Playing in the bay
  • Long walks
  • Cooking and savoring meals together
  • Our family sing-alongs
  • My aunt’s amazing piano playing ability
  • Sunsets into the ocean
  • Feeling my toes in the sand
  • The feel and smell of the ocean
  • My hair blowing in the breeze
  • The majesty of the ocean and waves
  • The memories of decades of beach fun
  • The waves rushing over my toes and legs

I wonder what fun and mischief we will get into while at the beach this summer?!  I sure cannot wait to find out!

Let The Summer Begin!

Nothing says summer like the ocean and the beach!

Nothing says summer like the ocean and the beach!

Although the calendar doesn’t say it is summer yet, we are starting our summer today.  Ian’s last day of school was yesterday, so let the summer begin!  Have you started your summer?

As I picked him up for one last walk home, one of the teachers said school starts back the first week of August.  Sheesh, we are just starting the summer break and we get reminded of when we start again.  I am ready to enjoy some down time and less structured days.

So we have approximately nine weeks of summer.  We plan to enjoy each and every one of those weeks!  We will then be ready for 2nd grade.  It seems that summers were longer when I was in school.  Then again, we didn’t have a week or two of fall break either.

This morning I had hoped to sleep in.  However, as anyone with young kids knows, that is a hard wish to have come true.  At 7:15 a.m., I heard, “Mom, are you ready to get up?”  “No Ian, not yet,” I responded and then tried to go back to sleep.

Then at 7:30 a.m., “Mom, are you getting up now?”  “No! I don’t want to get up this early. Why don’t you go play?,” I asked, trying not to be annoyed.  And off he went.

Next time I looked at the clock it was 8:15 a.m.  I woke up and was thankful that he was happy to play by himself during those 45 minutes.  I feel blessed and well rested.  I finally got out of bed at 8:30 a.m.

Funny that before being married and having kids I could sleep until almost noon, if I had been out late the night before.  Now, 8 a.m. is sleeping in.  Amazing how life changes, isn’t it?!  We had a lazy few hours after waking up.

Then we ate breakfast at 10 a.m. and have been busy ever since.  We have been doing laundry, some work for the family business, reading, and watching some TV.  Ian has been busy with Lego builds, reading his library books, and now is on the computer.

And, he has been telling me a lot about Mine craft and different Lego themes.  He knows a lot and has much to say.  It is fun hearing about things he is interested in.

Today we will more than likely stay in our pajamas, which I enjoy doing every once in a while. So, our first day of summer is exactly what I wanted — lazy and time to do various things at home.

This summer we will have more lazy days, take a few trips to North Carolina and one trip to California, swim, eat ice cream, take walks and bike rides, celebrate birthdays and anniversaries, work, read books, have lots of play time, and enjoy lots of other things.

I wonder what fun our summer will bring?  I can’t wait to find out.  Have a great one!

Flashback Friday – February 27

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAHappy Friday!  Can you believe it’s almost the end of February?  I can’t.  This month has gone so fast.  The last two weeks are a blur since we were home so much.

I decided on a photo of Ian with bare feet in the sand since I have been cold all day.  Between the ice and snow that are still melting, the water, and shoveling the driveway, I have been outside a few times today.  So brr since it was below freezing all day long.

This photo goes way back and makes me smile.  I think Ian was two years old.  We were at a beach in Florida and he was enjoying the feel of the sand and exploring all around.  This beach has lots of shells so that is fun.

I cannot wait for warmer weather!  I am over the freezing temps and will be glad when it is warm again.

Take care and have a great weekend!

Throwback Thursday – Summer Fun

SANYO DIGITAL CAMERAHi and Happy Throwback Thursday.  Since summer is winding down, I thought it would be fun to post an old photo of my son with my dad at the beach.  This was taken in July 2010, so Ian was a few months away from turning 3 years old.

I love how dad is showing Ian the fun of the ocean waves on your toes. And the feel of wet sand, and the importance of holding hands so you don’t fall over.

Four generations of my family have enjoyed this beach and I just love that.  There is much history there and many amazing memories.  I am so blessed to have gone there as a child and now to be able to take my child. It has also been fun to be there with my husband.

Today I am thankful for:

  • Summers spent at our family’s beach house
  • Toes in the sand
  • Feeling the water on our toes and legs
  • Spending time with parents and grandparents during the summer
  • Small feet that have grown quite a bit
  • Many years of fun memories
  • A chance to have four generations at the beach a few summers ago — something I will never forget
  • Our smooth transition from summer to school
  • A family who I love dearly and who love me
  • Friends who make me laugh and help me smile
  • Prayer support

I wonder what other fun things we will do before summer officially ends on September 23?  I look forward to finding out.  And, I also am looking forward to the fall/autumn season.

Throwback Thursday – Ocean

SANYO DIGITAL CAMERAHi and Happy Thursday!  It is time for another Throwback Thursday.  My, the week has gone fast.

I was looking through some old photos recently and came across this one.  It is from a few years ago at our favorite beach.  I thought it would be great for today.  I like this picture of Ian getting his feet wet at sunset time.  It was a very cloudy evening yet still lovely.

Some of my family is having fun at this beach, but we weren’t able to make it this year.  Instead we are doing other fun activities.  I do love the ocean and am enjoying their amazing pictures from this summer.  I am also enjoying mine from a few summers ago.

As I wrote about recently, we went to Charleston and got to see that coast at the harbor.  It is equally lovely and was a great trip seeing family.  We had a chance to go swimming as well.  It has been a good summer so far.

Yesterday I asked Ian how he was enjoying his summer, and he said, “I am Mommy.”  “Is there still anything you want to do Ian?” “Just go downtown Mommy.”

That will be a fun trip to a favorite city’s downtown street.  There is much to see and do and it is something to look forward to.  We should be able to do that this weekend. Downtown includes a great toy store, a general store, a wonderful bakery, a few used bookstores and a frozen yogurt shop.  There are also a variety of great restaurants and coffee shops.

Today I am thankful for:

  • Beach time with my family
  • Toes in the sand and water
  • Swimming with family
  • Family cookouts
  • An ice cream cone
  • Photos taken by family and friends
  • Reading a new book with my son
  • Finishing a book of my own
  • Dinner out with my best guys
  • Lightning bugs at sunset
  • Time with dear friends
  • Sharing a joke with a friend or family member
  • Remembering a loved ones life
  • Celebrating the news of a new life
  • Sharing prayer requests with others
  • Spending time window shopping and getting a treat while downtown

I wonder when I will be at the beach again?  I hope that it is soon, but in the meantime, I will enjoy other bodies of water and make the most of the time and places that I find myself in.  Have a great day!

Throwback Thursday – June 26

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAJust four more days of June left.  Wow!  Where has the month gone?  It seems like we just started it and our summer.  And now we are nearly halfway the summer through already.  Time certainly does fly as we get older, doesn’t it?!

Here is a really sweet picture of Ian at the beach in Fort Pierce, Florida. He was about 2 years old.  I love how it looks like he can reach out and touch the water.  “Look Mommy, almost got it” is what he is seeming to say.

As you can see on the sand, the beach is covered with shells.  This was a great shelling beach.  We had to wear our shoes to keep our feet safe.  Fun times!

Since this picture was taken, Ian has grown and changed so much.  His feet are now probably twice as big and he is much taller.  Amazing he was ever this little.

Today, I am thankful for:

  • My shell collection
  • The feel of sand in my toes
  • My son’s smile
  • A hug from Ian before bed as he says, “I love you Mommy”
  • A cold drink
  • An ocean breeze
  • Our summer schedule
  • A dinner date with my guys
  • Cheering on the USA during a soccer match
  • Watching a baseball game
  • Talking a walk

I wonder what our summer Thursday has in store for us?  I hope it’s something fun!

July 25 – Ground / Throwback Thursday

Hello and Happy Thursday!  Today is my father-in-law’s birthday!  Happy Birthday to him.  We’ll have cake with him and are taking him out for dinner tonight.  Should be a day of fun!

Ian at beachToday’s Photo-A-Day Challenge is Ground and it’s Throwback Thursday.  So, I decided to go with an old picture of Ian at the beach.

This is at a beach in Fort Pierce, Florida.  There are shells all over the sand, which I love!  I walked a few miles on this beach collecting shells. Now I have a vase full of them.

In this picture, Ian was about 2 years old.  He still had his pacifier in his mouth.  At that time of his life, it was hard to find him without it.

I love the look on his face in this picture.  He is so happy and full of adventure.  See his dimple?  He has them on both cheeks. He loved being barefoot that day so he could enjoy the sand.  He was fascinated with the texture.  This was a day that he ran around and had a ball.

He has grown quite a bit since then and no longer has the paci, but he still loves the beach!!!  Just like his mommy.

This sand is very different from my favorite Mission Beach, CA.  I love that each beach has its own uniqueness.  Special times have been had at both of these beaches!!

Hope you have a great Thursday!  I wonder what adventures today will hold?  I don’t know about you, but I can’t wait to find out!

Throwback Thursday – 2 Girls at Mission Beach, CA

Hi and Happy Thursday.   We are just a few days away from the end of the month.  Can you believe it?  This year has flown by.  Now we are in the midst of another wonderful summer!!

Cindy.Patti.seawallToday for my new Throwback Thursday, I wanted to post two of my favorite pictures of me with my sister Cindy.

The time was in the early 1970s, the place is Mission Beach, CA, and as you can see we are wearing matching outfits.

The photo on the left is cute as we are in motion and ready to hit the beach – even though we are both dressed up.  I love the wind in our hair and our bodies in motion.

girls at beachThe photo on the right showed our personalities at the time.  I was very shy as a child and liked to be quiet and Cindy was very outgoing with a zeal and zest for life — even as a very young girl.

This picture captures both of us and who we were at the time.

Since these photos were taken, we have taken many, many other pictures at this favorite location.  We have them throughout our growing up years and with our own children.

Last summer, we took pictures of the two of us sitting on the seawall with our mother.  Special times and special pictures!

I wonder what our next wonderful pictures will be?  Will they be at this much-loved beach or somewhere else?  It will be fun to find out!

Ready For Summer!

CATES_at_MBThis month has been a crazy busy one for me.  How about you?

There has been so much to do for a while now.  Hopefully all of that will soon wind down with summer coming!

Can you believe the first day of summer is on Monday with Memorial Day?  Actually it isn’t the first official day of summer but does start the time. Pools open and people get out their boats to take to the lake.  It’s a wonderful time of year!

With many schools starting in mid-August, the summer is now a lot shorter than when I was in school. I remember three months of summer back when I was in high school.  The summers seemed to last forever and did from early June until after Labor Day when we went back.

There has been talk in Tennessee of changing the starting date of school back to September.  I do hope that is done!

I do so love the summer and all of the fun to be had!  Days at the pool or lake, trips to the library and local museums, or doing whatever we feel like.  YEAH!  I just hope it isn’t too humid.  But, in East Tennessee, that is part of the summer.  Time to get used to that!

What I especially like about the summer is going to the beach.  I have been fortunate to go each summer of Ian’s life to our favorite beach — Mission Beach, California (which I have written a lot about).  It has been fun to spend time with our family and see our friends each summer.  The ones there have seen him grow from an 8-month-old to now 5 1/2-year-old.

SANYO DIGITAL CAMERAFive years in a row for mostly a month visit has been an amazing gift and real pleasure!  I feel totally spoiled and have loved each and every minute!  Above is one picture of us when Ian was 2 years old.  To the left is from last summer when he was playing on the sand.

Unfortunately this summer, we won’t be able to go.  That is a real bummer and something that saddens me greatly.  However, we will make the best of our other activities that we will be doing.

Each time I go to the beach, it is so relaxing and brings back so many memories of my childhood.  I hate I will miss it, but have so many pictures of fun in years past to enjoy.

We can’t do everything that we want and this summer is one of those things.  Perhaps, I will instead go to the community pool to swim, go to the lake for a cookout, go to a baseball game, or simply go out for an ice cream treat.

This summer will be different but it will also be a special one since my son starts kindergarten this fall, actually in August.  My baby is grown up and ready for the next part of his life.

I must admit it is a bit tough on his mommy, but he is so ready!  I am thrilled and excited for him and all of the new things that he will be learning.  He already is a sponge and that will just increase.

Ah, summer!!  How I love it so!  I hope it will be a great one for us and for you as well!  Have fun.

I wonder what our adventures will be with this different summer!  I can’t wait to find out.
